Karzai Says Women’s Education Essential for Development on Science Day
Former Afghanistan president Hamid Karzai stresses women’s access to education remains essential for national development as restrictions continue limiting girls’ learning opportunities nationwide.
Former Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai said societal progress and development depend on women and girls playing an active role, which requires full access to education and science.
In a message marking International Day of Women and Girls in Science on Wednesday, Karzai praised Afghan women’s contributions to social life and national development.
Girls in Afghanistan have been barred from attending secondary schools for more than 1,600 days, leaving millions without access to formal education across the country.
Taliban authorities have also closed universities and medical institutes to female students and restricted women’s employment in many sectors since returning to power in 2021.
Karzai encouraged Afghan girls and women to continue striving for access to education and participation in national development despite ongoing restrictions and challenges.
Observers say exclusion of women from education and professional life risks long-term damage to Afghanistan’s economy and social progress if restrictions remain in place.
International organizations continue urging Afghan authorities to restore educational and employment opportunities for women to support stability and future economic recovery.
Karzai emphasized that Afghanistan’s future prosperity depends on ensuring women and girls can study, work, and contribute equally to rebuilding the country.
