Heavy Morning Fog Disrupts Traffic in Kabul
The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan said that the heavy fog covered Kabul between 6:00 and 8:30 a.m., causing major disruptions across roads and transport routes.
According to UNAMA on Wednesday, visibility dropped close to zero, forcing vehicles to stop or move cautiously, while aircraft were unable to land at Kabul airport.
Kabul frequently experiences seasonal fog and winter air pollution, conditions that often disrupt transport and raise health concerns for residents across densely populated districts.
Experts say rapid urban growth, vehicle emissions, and climate-related weather changes contribute to worsening air quality and weather-related disruptions in Afghanistan’s capital during winter months.
UNAMA noted that reduced visibility even prevented one of its staff members from recognizing a familiar office building while traveling on the Jalalabad–Kabul highway.
The mission explained such fog forms when falling temperatures cause moisture to condense into tiny droplets that remain suspended in the air, severely affecting visibility.
UNAMA added that recent rain and snowfall, despite causing temporary disruptions, provide hope for easing Afghanistan’s long-running drought affecting agriculture and water resources.
Officials say improved weather conditions may ease transport disruptions, while continued precipitation could help Afghanistan cope with ongoing climate-related environmental challenges.
