Mauricio Pochettino hints Tottenham could get an even better manager the second time around
Tottenham fans have been speculating about Mauricio Pochettino’s return to the club for a very long time, and if he does come back, we could see a very different version of the former Spurs boss.
By the time this summer rolls around, it will have been just shy of seven years since Pochettino was relieved of his duties at Tottenham.
Since then, we’ve seen the likes of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte fail at Spurs, while Ange Postecoglou ended the long wait for a trophy. Now, we are in Thomas Frank’s era, and it’s not going well.
Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettino has spent time with PSG, Chelsea, and is now preparing for a World Cup with the USA. And, he thinks he’s far better at his job than he was seven years ago.
Mauricio Pochettino thinks he’s improved since Tottenham tenure
Pochettino is expected to jump at the chance to come back to Spurs, and if that does happen, the fans should be happy to hear that he’s improved a lot since he was last at the club.
Speaking on the High Performance Podcast, Pochettino was asked if he is at the peak of his powers now, and he insisted he’s the best manager he’s ever been at this moment in time.
“I think so. Yeah. I think so. I think so. I think I can be better because I think you can always improve,” he said. “But I think today we have the capacity and the knowledge, the balance to provide to every single person or any club or any company. There are many good, good things I have seen.”
Pochettino has big ambitions, citing his desire to win the Premier League one day. He’s already won trophies with PSG, and now he will get the chance to show what he can do on the world stage in the summer.
Beyond that, maybe we’ll see him back in a club role and having the chance to fulfil those lofty ambitions with the club he loves the most.
How Pochettino’s time at Chelsea and PSG compares to Spurs reign
While Mauricio Pochettino was at Tottenham, he recorded 160 wins out of 293 matches. That’s an average of 1.84 points per game (PPG) and a win ratio of 54.61% while in North London.
His time at PSG was rather shorter, but Pochettino did register a 66.67% win ratio and an average of 2.15 PPG, with 56 wins from 84 matches in charge. Granted, we have to take into consideration the fact that this was with a far superior team in a much weaker league.
Pochettino won three trophies at PSG, being crowned Ligue 1 champion as well as winning the French Cup and the French Super Cup.
During his spell with Chelsea, Pochettino won 27 of his 51 games to rack up a 52.94% win rate. His PPG average of 1.78 is slightly lower than his record at Spurs, but is still pretty respectable.
