New Winter Storm Warnings Announced for 10 States as 11 Inches of Snow, 40 mph Winds Approach
On Tuesday, Feb. 10, the National Weather Service expanded its winter storm warnings for the week and cautioned that 11 states are bracing for additional snow and strong winds.
"A clipper system passing through the Interior Northeast/New England today will bring light to moderate snowfall, particularly from Upstate New York through central/northern New England," the NWS stated in an official bulletin. "A wintry mix including some light freezing rain will be possible for areas of the northern Mid-Atlantic into southern New England. The system will quickly depart the region by Wednesday bringing an end to the precipitation for most locations."
The National Weather Service added that "however, cold post-frontal flow will bring some lake-effect snows downwind of Lakes Erie and Ontario, with some additional light snowfall possible for upslope regions of the Appalachians. Elsewhere, showers and a few thunderstorms will be possible along a trailing cold front from the Ohio Valley southwest through west Texas on Tuesday. A few additional storms will be possible into the Southeast on Wednesday."
10 States Across the United States in Line for More Winter Storm Warnings and Gusty Winds
So, those hoping for a break from the snow and cold may be out of luck. According to the National Weather Service, 10 states are in line for more snow and gusty winds, including areas of Wisconsin, Michigan, California, New York, Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Montana, Wyoming and Alaska.
When it comes to snowfall, NWS meteorologists in Binghamton and Buffalo, New York, issued a winter weather advisory for the area for an upwards of 11 inches of snow. According to their research, the snow is expected to fall late Tuesday morning, Feb. 10, and continue falling through Wednesday night, Feb. 11.
Meanwhile, the states in the Northeast bracing for severe weather should expect anywhere from a dusting to up to several inches of additional snow. In Montana and Wyoming, it's even more, meteorologists warning of up to 20 inches of new snow in the higher elevations near Cooke City and the Absaroka-Beartooth Mountains. Likewise, in California, winter weather advisories and winter storm warnings are in place for higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada and northern and central California, with snowfall of up to 24 inches possible in the higher elevations. Also in the Sierra Nevada, forecasters are predicting wind gusts of 35–40 mph.
In the Midwest, expect up to six additional inches of snow, especially in areas that get lake-effect snow. Snow is nothing new in Alaska, and there, forecasters are projecting Anchorage and Fairbanks to get up to 12 inches of snow and blizzard conditions through 3 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11.
Be Cautious Amid Dangerous Weather and Don't Forget About Fog
As spring nears, the NWS is reminding people to still be careful amid foggy conditions. After all, it's not just snow and ice that cause hazardous driving.
"Dense fog can quickly and unexpectedly reduce visibility to a quarter mile or less," the NWS stated on X. "If you find yourself driving through dense fog, small decisions can make a big impact...or save you from one."
