Telling New Details Emerge From Disappearance of Savannah Guthrie's Mom
It has been 10 days since Nancy Guthrie was last seen, and her family is now correcting initial reports regarding the circumstances of her disappearance.
Early reports said concern for Guthrie, 84, began when she failed to show up for a Sunday, Feb. 1 church service in Tucson, Arizona. However, that information is inaccurate, her family says.
Nancy Guthrie's family sets record straight
According to Fox News, a Guthrie family source said Nancy was actually expected at a friend's house to watch a virtual church service, a tradition that began during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"The source told Fox News that for years — dating back to the COVID pandemic — Nancy and a small group of close friends had a standing Sunday routine that did not involve attending church in person," Fox News wrote. "Instead, the group would gather at one another’s homes to watch a New York–based church service via livestream."
The service was streamed from Good Shepherd in New York, the church attended by Savannah Guthrie, Nancy's daughter and the longtime co-host of Today.
"When Nancy didn’t attend the regularly scheduled viewing and couldn’t be reached, her friends contacted her daughter, Annie, who had been with her the night before for dinner," PEOPLE said.
Savannah Guthrie share new public message
Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her home in Tucson on Saturday, Jan. 31. On Monday, her daughter Savannah issued a new plea for help in a video posted to social media.
“We believe somehow, someway, she is feeling these prayers and that God is lifting her even in this moment, and in this darkest place,” Savannah said. “We believe our mom is still out there. We need your help. Law enforcement is working tirelessly around the clock, trying to bring her home, trying to find her. She was taken and we don’t know where. And we need your help."
Savannah added that she and her family are "at an hour of desperation" as the reported ransom note deadline passed.
Police issue updates, ask for patience
In their own message Monday, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department updated the state of their investigation, saying that while they had no new info to share, the case remains ongoing.
“We do not have any additional information to release publicly this afternoon," the message began. "The investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance remains active and ongoing. We understand the significant public interest in this case; however, investigators need time and space to do their work. If and when relevant information becomes available, it will be shared."
Additionally, the Pime County Sheriff's Department said that law enforcement activity would continue at the Guthrie residences into Tuesday, including the home of Nancy's daughter Annie and her husband, Tommaso Cioni.
“Many of you observed an active law enforcement presence at the Guthrie residences over the weekend. That activity will continue tonight and into tomorrow as part of the ongoing investigative process, including the expansion of the search and follow-up on new leads,” the message added. “This is all part of the investigative process, as the search for Nancy expands and new leads come in. To preserve the integrity of this criminal investigation, details of that process are not being released at this time.”
