UN Chief Warns Israeli Actions in West Bank Threaten Two-State Solution
UN chief warns Israeli West Bank measures threaten two-state solution, urging halt to actions amid rising humanitarian and political tensions in the region.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Monday, Febraury 9 criticized Israel’s security cabinet decision to implement new administrative and executive measures in parts of the West Bank.
Guterres said Israeli settlements in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, lack legal validity and violate international law and United Nations resolutions.
He added that Israel’s continued presence in Palestinian territories fuels instability and has been deemed illegal under international legal assessments, including findings by the International Court of Justice.
The UN chief urged Israel to halt the measures and called on all sides to pursue peace efforts in line with international law and Security Council resolutions.
Tensions in the Palestinian territories have escalated in recent months, with growing international concern over settlement expansion and rising violence affecting civilians across the region.
Meanwhile, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, has warned that it urgently needs $1.26 billion in funding to respond to worsening humanitarian conditions.
Diplomatic pressure continues to mount as international actors warn that without restraint and renewed negotiations, prospects for a lasting peace could further diminish.
