Kansas’ Darryn Peterson misses another game with ‘flu-like symptoms’
By JAMES MADDEN
Lawrence, KS – Kansas star Darryn Peterson was once again inactive for the Jayhawks, missing the team’s 82-78 win against No. 1 Arizona on Monday night. Peterson has dealt with cramping and leg issues all season long, but was ruled out just minutes before tip-off with “flu-like symptoms.”
Jayhawks head coach Bill Self said postgame that Peterson didn’t practice on Sunday, but participated in team actives, before the decision to rule him out was made.
“We don’t know if it’s the flu, it’s flu-like symptoms. He didn’t practice yesterday, but we were hoping he could play today,” Self said postgame. “We didn’t know until probably, 7:00, 7:30 that he probably wasn’t going to be able to go.”
Self was asked about Peterson not being included in the Big 12 availability report, which is a new rule the conference implemented this season.
“We thought he’d go. I thought adrenaline would kick in,” Self said. “He was at shoot around today. He was out there, but you could just tell he didn’t feel great.”
With the Jayhawks hitting their stride as the calendar inches closer to March, they improved to 19-5 on the season with the win.
Monday’s result also means that there is just one remaining unbeaten team across the country: Miami (OH).
Having played in just 13 of Kansas’s 24 games, Peterson’s status for Saturday’s game against No. 5 Iowa State is unclear. The Jayhawks travel to Ames to face the Cyclones on Saturday at 12 p.m. eastern.
