Rashid Khan: ‘Definitely’ Wants Afghanistan to Field a Women’s Cricket Team
Rashid Khan voiced support for future participation of Afghanistan women’s cricket team, renewing debate over representation, policy barriers, and international cricket obligations.
Afghanistan cricket star Rashid Khan said he hopes the country will one day field a national women’s cricket team in international competitions.
Speaking ahead of a T20 World Cup match, Khan said he personally supports women representing Afghanistan, though final decisions rest with cricket authorities.
He noted that maintaining a women’s team is among expectations of the International Cricket Council (ICC) for full member nations, including Afghanistan.
However, former women’s national player Firooza Afghan criticized both the ICC and Afghanistan’s cricket leadership, saying earlier decisions sidelined women’s cricket and damaged opportunities for female players.
She argued Afghanistan already had a women’s team, but it was marginalized, forcing many players to leave the country and continue their careers abroad.
After political changes in Afghanistan, women and girls were barred from organized sports, leading to the collapse of national women’s teams across several disciplines, including cricket.
Many former women’s cricket players now live in exile in countries such as Australia, Canada, and Britain, where some continue playing at local club levels.
Khan’s remarks have reignited debate about the future of women’s cricket in Afghanistan, highlighting ongoing tensions between sporting inclusion, governance decisions, and international cricket standards.
