WFP Provides School Meals to 880,000 Children Across Afghanistan in 2025
The World Food Programme says 880,000 Afghan children received school meals in 2025, supporting education amid worsening hunger and economic hardship nationwide.
The World Food Programme (WFP) said on Monday, Febraury 9 that it provided school meals to about 880,000 children across Afghanistan during 2025 through its nationwide nutrition programme.
WFP said the initiative aims to support education by encouraging families to keep children in school while addressing hunger affecting vulnerable communities.
According to the agency, meals fortified with vitamins and minerals help improve children’s concentration, learning ability, and overall health in classrooms across the country.
The organization previously described school feeding as life-saving for many Afghan children who often rely on these meals as their main daily nutrition source.
UNICEF earlier reported that about 942,000 children in Afghanistan suffer from severe acute malnutrition, while another 700,000 face moderate malnutrition risks.
The United Nations also estimates that more than 17 million people in Afghanistan are experiencing food insecurity as economic pressures and humanitarian needs continue to grow.
Aid agencies warn sustained funding and continued school feeding support remain crucial to prevent rising hunger from forcing more Afghan children out of classrooms.
