Drake Curse Strikes Again: Rapper Loses $3M in Super Bowl Bet Against Seahawks
The Drake Curse has struck again, but is anyone really surprised? It feels now like it just wouldn’t be a major sporting event if the Canadian rapper didn’t lose a large sum of money.
On Saturday, just hours ahead of the Seattle Seahawks facing down the New England Patriots in Santa Clara, CA, Drake announced that he placed a $1 million bet on New England to win. “Bet against me if you dare,” he boasted with remarkable hubris, adding that he’d stand to take home $2.95 million if the Patriots emerged victorious.
Of course, that did not happen. The Seahawks bested the Patriots in a stunning 29–13 defeat; and Drake went home several million dollars lighter. Despite having the endorsement of Massachusetts native Mark Wahlberg, who commented “SMART MAN????❤️????” on Drake’s Saturday post, many of the singer’s fans tried to warn him against publicly (let alone financially) endorsing his preferred team. A great number of people on social media felt that Drake solidified the Seahawks’ victory with his New England endorsement due to the viral Drake Curse theory.
The 'Drake Curse' Is a Well-Documented Phenomenon
The Drake Curse theory contends that whichever team Drake supports will lose. The curse theory was born after a series of public betting losses on behalf of the musician, such as a $60,000 bet between himself and French Montana over the 2016 NBA Finals and a $1 million bet that the Toronto Maple Leafs would prevail over the Florida Panthers last year (they did not). At last year’s Super Bowl, Drake staked yet another $1 million bet on the Kansas City Chiefs, predicting they’d prevail over the Philadelphia Eagles (they did not).
“Bro already lost the fight before the battle starts,” one fan wrote on Drake’s weekend post. Another added: “Drake, you my guy, but holy you’re cursed when it comes to betting on sports. I know every single time to take the opposite of whoever you think is going to win, that’s how bad it is.”
Drake Brushed Off Curse Before Admitting to It in 2025 Interview
Last year, Drake addressed the so-called curse himself in an interview, brushing off its significance. "The Drake Curse is funny to me, honestly. First of all, the Raptors won a championship, so nobody could ever talk to me about the Drake Curse," he said of the team’s 2019 victory. "The Toronto Raptors are NBA Champions. If there was a Drake Curse, Kawhi [Leonard] would’ve never hit that shot, we would’ve never beat the Warriors. There is no Drake curse, but it’s funny, though.”
However, later in the same interview, Drake admitted that he’s a "flawed sports bettor," adding that it’s "not my gift." "I’m sure if you’re a Drake curse believer, there will be plenty more content in the future to confirm your theories because, for whatever reason, my slips do not cash out,” he said.
