Thomas Frank responds to question of ‘desperate’ Tottenham relegation battle

Thomas Frank has now opened up on whether Tottenham Hotspur are in a relegation fight following their poor run of form.

Tottenham Hotspur currently find themselves in 15th place in the Premier League after 25 games this season.

Spurs have managed just two wins from their last 16 league outings, and remain without a win in the Premier League in 2026.

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank addresses relegation battle fears

Speaking to football.london, Frank addressed whether Tottenham are in a relegation battle, stressing the urgency to return to winning ways while keeping his focus on the next fixture.

He said, “There’s no doubt we are desperate to win games. Desperate. And I’m focusing on Newcastle tomorrow. That’s a great opportunity ahead of us against a good team. That’s the main thing. Can we go out there and get three points tomorrow? That would be very good. And then climb from there and look forward. That’s what we need to do. And that’s the main focus.”

Asked if he thinks the current available Spurs players can get away from that fight, Thomas Frank added: “Yeah. I think we have. Of course, there’s no doubt that we have a lot of players out. That, of course, never helps. I think I actually put a very competitive team out against Man Utd. And I think we look very good for the first 30 minutes.

“We lose two players for tomorrow (Romero and Udogie), but Djed Spence is back. And I think Dragusin is going to look good when he comes back in. So, I know we’ll put a very competitive team out tomorrow as well. And then there should be, hopefully, a little bit more (players) after that coming back for the team.

“As I say, I focus on the game against Newcastle tomorrow, that’s the most important thing and can we get a good performance out there and get three points. Then we will start to climb and that’s what it’s all about.

“We need to climb and every year, every day, we need to climb the table until you are where you want to be and there’s only one place where you want to be in the future. So, that’s the main focus right now.”

Spurs are in desperate need of points, especially with several of their relegation rivals slowly finding form at this stage of the season.

It is worth noting that Frank never used the phrase ‘relegation battle’ or even the word ‘relegation’ in his press conference answers, even when the question was directly posed.

Spurs need points as pressure grows

The game against Newcastle United is crucial for Tottenham if they are to widen the gap between themselves and the bottom three.

The Magpies are not in fine form, having lost their last three games on the bounce in the league. If Spurs can start the game strongly, they stand a chance of taking three points on Tuesday.

When asked if he is expecting an intense battle, from Newcastle and the supposed relegation fight, Thomas Frank said: “I think every Premier League game is a battle. If someone doesn’t understand that, then they shouldn’t play in the Premier League. It’s the most physical, competitive, relentless league in the world. No doubt about that. So, every game is a battle. So that will not change tomorrow.

“Newcastle are very physical, very intense in the way they play. And Eddie is a coach I admire a lot. What he’s done in Newcastle, he came in there four and a half years ago. I think the first year when I was there with Brentford, so I followed them closely.

“He, in my opinion, basically has been part of transforming the club. So, he made sure they didn’t go down. And the next year, when they had no European, I think they finished fourth, and then you can see how, even though they have a second year of experience in terms of Champions League, you can see it’s not easy to play Champions League in Premier League. I think they have about four points more than us.

“And they’ve been with that project, worked with that for three or four years. And he’s a very good coach, and there’s a very good coaching team up there that admire a lot what they do. So it just shows it’s not so straightforward.

“There’s no, how can you say, recipe for, oh, you just do this, and you do this, and it’s a success every year, no matter what you do. No, no, no, it’s every day, relentless, how you work with things, how you try to improve it. So I think they’ve done fantastic up there.”

However, with the game coming at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, it remains very tricky for Frank’s men, given Spurs’ poor home form. If Tottenham are to stay in the English top flight, they need to fix their home form, and the twelfth man will be vital.
