This keyboard shortcut makes Edge better than Chrome
ChromeOS has a native screenshot feature. Chrome does not. And its rivals are exploiting this oversight.
Enough that I currently like Edge better than Chrome. These are words I never thought I’d say.
Part of this is due to Windows. I love how easy it is to take screenshots now using keystrokes (WIN + SHIFT + S, if you didn’t already know). But Windows 11 automatically saves all screenshots by default—this is often useful, but not always necessary. Or even wanted. If it captures personal details that then gets beamed to OneDrive via automated backup (or someone gains access to the PC), that could become a problem.
I make a point of periodically cleaning up junky or sensitive screencaps, but it’s an extra drag on my time I’d prefer to avoid.
The better alternative: Using CTRL + SHIFT + S in Edge, Firefox, and Brave. It grabs a screenshot that does not automatically save, and you can select as much or as little of the screen as you want. (Unlike the ol’ reliable PRINTSCREEN [or PRTSC] key, which only grabs a full screen capture.) It’s also very similar to the Windows shortcut. I find it very easy to switch back and forth when choosing a permanent screenshot (Windows keyboard shortcut) or a temporary screenshot (e.g., for dropping into a message chat or email).
Add in my favorite quick way to clear the clipboard when I’m all done, and now I spend much less mental energy on digital decluttering and privacy worries.
But Google is the holdout on this trend. It’s a real shame, too. Because until it does, I’ll keep using Edge a bit more. (Feels so weird.)
