Patagonia's Lightweight Waxed Cotton Jacket Is 50% Off Right Now

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services.  If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Why We Love This Deal

When you think about tough waxed jackets, styles like the Filson Tin Cloth jacket and Flint and Tinder's Flannel-Lined Waxed Trucker Jacket are two that come to mind for us. But they're hardly the only ones out there. Wax coatings on jackets were originally used as a natural water repellent. That's why we're not surprised to see Patagonia offering a take on a waxed jacket. What is surprising, however, is that it's on sale and under $200.

Patagonia’s Lightweight Waxed Cotton Jacket is just $184 right now, a 50% discount off its normal price of $369. This lightweight coat combines function, timeless appeal, and sustainability to make a sort of movement-friendly rain jacket that sheds water the natural way—using plant-based wax. It's on sale in four cool colors, and most sizes from XS to 2XL are still available.

What Shoppers Should Know

  • Type: Lightweight waxed cotton jacket
  • Colors: 4
  • Sizes: XS to 2XL
  • Shell: 100% organic cotton ripstop
  • Wax: Halley Stevensons EverWax Olive
  • Lining: 55% hemp, 45% organic Cotton muslin
  • Best For: Miler cold weather days, rugged looks, spring/fall, winter layering

This jacket starts with its 100% organic cotton ripstop fabric that has been treated with the signature Halley Stevensons plant-based wax. What you get is a natural-based jacket that is breathable, water-resistant, and made with no synthetic chemicals. It sheds water and blocks wind quite well. The neat thing is that this wax is temperature-adaptive, which means it's softer and more breathable in warmer climates (like spring), yet it acts stiffer and more windproof in the cold for fall and winter. Its hemp-cotton muslin lining is supremely soft, while its aesthetic gives that field coat practicality.

Plain and simple: this is not a technical-based rain shell. Instead, this ruggedly built coat is designed for men who value classic appeal and natural materials while still needing weather protection. Something similar from Barbour or Filson will cost twice as much on average and weigh a whole heck of a lot more. This one is noticeably lighter and more breathable, for more everyday city wear (as opposed to heritage countryside strolls).

Halley Stevensons’ olive-based wax, used on this, is derived from food-safe waste. This natural eco-wax is what gives this jacket a faint, “old” or vintage smell that some shoppers note this jacket carries. It’s not unpleasant, just unique, and part of the charm of owning something natural.

What Wearers Are Saying

A handful of shoppers have left reviews for this jacket. Reviews might seem mixed, but the main negative was just over the subtle smell, which isn't all that uncommon with these kinds of jackets.

What was resounding was praise for its performance: One wearer said this “solid” jacket is great even in the harsh Pacific Northwest rain. They said, “I went outside with it, the jacket held up against the downpour and the strong wind.” Water did not soak through, and it significantly cut the wind down.

Once Patagonia gear goes on sale, it doesn't stick around long. Once they hit half off, they practically disappear. Don’t wait around to score your Lightweight Waxed Cotton Jacket.
