Green Garnet Mine Discovered in Panjshir, Afghanistan
Panjshir’s Minerals and Petroleum Department announces the discovery of a green garnet mine.
The Taliban-controlled Minerals and Petroleum Department in Panjshir has reported the first discovery of a green garnet mine in the province.
According to Mohammad Qasim Amiri, head of the department, the mine is located in the Ab-Dara village of Anaba district.
Extraction rights for the mine have been granted to an individual named Syed Rahim, as announced in an official newsletter.
Critics and citizens have repeatedly expressed concern over favoritism, noting that many contracts are awarded to Taliban officials or their relatives.
Green garnet is a semi-precious gemstone, ranging from light to emerald green, used mainly in jewelry and specialized industrial applications.
Panjshir has significant mineral potential, including semi-precious stones, but access and licensing have long been criticized for lack of transparency and local participation.
Green garnet, composed of calcium and aluminum silicates, is highly valued in jewelry-making, decorative arts, and certain industrial applications due to its unique properties.
