Paul Merson reveals he apologised to Tottenham star for his harsh comments
Paul Merson admits that his past comments about one senior Tottenham star were unfair, and he called the player to apologise.
Cristian Romero continues to be a lightning rod for criticism from the media, and the Argentine certainly has not helped his case with his latest red card against Man United.
Another senior Spurs man was similarly targeted by several pundits last season, even though he always delivered when fit.
A former Arsenal man has now admitted that he was wrong to single out the player for criticism on one particular occasion.
Paul Merson admits his comments about Tottenham star were unfair
Maddison was often singled out for criticism last season as one of Tottenham’s senior players as the Lilywhites floundered in the Premier League.
Ian Wright has said that the Tottenham star is unfairly treated for being outspoken and having a personality.
Merson has now admitted that he apologised to Maddison after his comments about the Spurs vice-captain following the Lilywhites’ defeat at home in a North London derby.
The pundit said on The Overlap: “I did an Arsenal game against Tottenham at the new stadium. Tottenham were atrocious that day, atrocious, but I picked out Maddison. Afterwards, I thought, ‘Why am I picking him out and not everyone else?’ I just said it wasn’t good enough.
“When you’re playing as a 10, you’ve got to affect a football match; it doesn’t matter how badly the rest of the team are playing. So I rang him up, and he said, ‘Oh, I haven’t even seen it’.”
Spurs have missed James Maddison’s leadership this season
Last season, Maddison was often the first to put his hand up and apologise after poor performances from Ange Postecoglou’s side.
The attacking midfielder said in an interview with Sky Sports last year that he does not mind attracting criticism if it means that his younger teammates are shielded.
Not only have Tottenham missed Maddison’s creative quality on the pitch this season after his ACL injury in the summer, but his absence has also left a leadership vacuum in the dressing room in what has been a difficult period at the club.
