Oakland man charged with attempting to murder suspects in a gang-related killing
OAKLAND — Police here appear to be making headway in shootings that occurred years ago.
In December, prosecutors charged 26-year-old Shaka Fagans with attempted murder for allegedly shooting at two men in 2022. Both victims in that case are uncharged suspects in the 2021 killing of Bert Brigham III, a fatal shooting that Oakland police attributed to a feud between two rival gangs in East Oakland, court records show.
One suspect in Brigham’s killing, 25-year-old Hanif McLeod, was arrested and charged with murder last month. Authorities allege that after Brigham was killed, Fagans attempted to kill two of the men he believed was responsible.
Brigham was fatally shot around 10 p.m. on July 18, 2021, at the the 1900 block of Foothill Boulevard in Oakland. The two uncharged suspects were fired upon almost exactly a year later, on July 27, 2022, at the 2400 block of 12th Avenue.
After the 2022 shooting, police allege that Fagans had a conversation with one of the men he fired at, who explained that Brigham wasn’t the intended target. Police have linked other nonfatal shootings to the same feud, according to court records.
Fagans was released from jail after posting $150,000 bail, court records show. He was initially charged with possessing guns and ammunition as a felon, but those charges were dropped in January before he bailed out of jail, records show.
