‘Outrageous insults’: U.S. ambassador taunts Poland with troop withdrawal after official attacks Trump

Things turned ugly between Washington and Warsaw this week after the U.S. ambassador to Poland publicly floated pulling American troops in response to a Polish leader’s attacks on President Donald Trump.

The controversy began after Polish Parliament Speaker Włodzimierz Czarzasty blasted Trump and dismissed him as unworthy of a Nobel Peace Prize. U.S. Ambassador to Poland Tom Rose responded by severing all contact with Czarzasty and later appeared to question whether the U.S. should continue stationing troops in the NATO ally.

Czarzasty, co-chair of Poland’s New Left party and speaker of the lower house of Polish Parliament, said Monday that he would “not support the Nobel nomination for President Trump because he does not deserve it,” according to Polskie Radio.

The speaker accused Trump of disrespecting Poland when saying NATO allies failed to adequately support the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan. Czarzasty also claimed Trump has weakened international institutions through “illusory” initiatives and “destabilizes” by engaging in “transactional politics through the use of force.”

Rose snapped back at Czarzasty on Thursday, accusing him of actively undermining the U.S.-Polish alliance and that he would immediately cut off communication with the Polish politician, calling the remarks “outrageous and unprovoked insults.”

“Effective immediately, we will have no further dealings, contacts, or communications” with Czarzasty, Rose wrote on X on Thursday.

“We will not permit anyone to harm U.S.–Polish relations, nor disrespect Donald Trump, who has done so much for Poland and the Polish people,” Rose wrote, adding that the speaker had become a “serious impediment to our excellent relations with Prime Minister [Donald] Tusk and his government.”

The confrontation prompted a response from Tusk, who pushed back against the ambassador’s remarks.

“Mr. Ambassador Rose, allies should respect, not lecture, each other,” Tusk wrote on X. “At least this is how we, here in Poland, understand partnership.”

Rose fired back again, arguing that Tusk’s criticism was misplaced and should have been directed at Czarzasty. He condemned the speaker’s remarks as “despicable, disrespectful and insulting,” while simultaneously praising Tusk as “a model ally and great friend of the United States.”

“Mr. Prime Minister, I have nothing but the greatest respect and admiration for your lifetime of bold leadership and for your decades of contributions that strengthened the U.S.–Poland relationship,” Rose wrote. “As I’m sure you also know, I will always defend my President without hesitation, exception or apology.”

When another Polish X user responded to the ambassador by saying “go home,” Rose angrily replied and floated the idea that the U.S. could withdraw troops and equipment from the country, as Politico reported Friday.

“Should we take all our soldiers and equipment with us?” he wrote, using his personal X account. That post was later deleted, but not before screenshots were shared.

The exchange drew widespread attention, including some criticism from within the Republican Party.

“Time for a new Ambassador,” wrote Republican Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska, a frequent critic of the Trump administration, on X.

Meanwhile, allies of Polish President Karol Nawrocki — who has cultivated a close relationship with Trump — placed blame on Czarzasty for provoking the crisis.

“He is unnecessarily causing tension in Polish-American relations,” said Marcin Przydacz, Nawrocki’s foreign policy adviser, according to Politico.

The U.S. Embassy in Poland did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
