Over 2,000 Islamic State detainees transferred from Syria to Iraq, officials say
Iraq says hundreds of detained Islamic State members are being transferred from Syria as Baghdad expands efforts to prisons and pursue prosecutions.
Iraqi security spokesman Saad Maan said 2,250 detained Islamic State members have been transferred from Syria to Iraq, with further transfers expected.
According to Kurdistan24, the operation was coordinated with the international coalition and conducted by land and air, placing detainees in high-security Iraqi facilities.
Reuters earlier reported the United States is close to completing the transfer of about 7,000 suspected IS detainees, prioritizing those considered most dangerous.
Iraqi officials say interrogations could yield intelligence supporting regional security, while a high-level committee has been formed to oversee investigations and legal processing.
U.S. forces are directly assisting the transfer operations, and many detainees are accused of involvement in the 2014 IS attacks across Iraq and Syria.
Thousands of suspected IS fighters and family members have remained in detention camps in northeast Syria following the militant group’s territorial defeat in 2019.
Several countries have been reluctant to repatriate their nationals, leaving Iraq and regional authorities handling complex security and legal challenges involving foreign fighters.
Iraqi and U.S. officials say continued cooperation and international coordination remain essential to ensure detainees face justice while preventing future extremist threats.
