Pakistan arrests four, including alleged mastermind, over Islamabad mosque bombing
Pakistan arrested four suspects, including the mastermind, after a suicide bombing on a Shiite mosque in Islamabad killed dozens and wounded worshippers.
Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said security forces arrested four men, including the suspected planner of the deadly mosque bombing in Islamabad.
The suspects were detained during security operations in Peshawar and Nowshera following investigations into Friday’s suicide attack on Khadija al-Kubra mosque.
At least 33 people, including the attacker, were killed and more than 170 others injured when the bomber detonated explosives during crowded prayers.
Thousands attended a mass funeral for the victims, with mourners gathering in large numbers as security remained heightened across the capital.
The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack, while Pakistan’s defense minister alleged the bomber had traveled to Afghanistan, claims rejected by India and Taliban authorities.
Pakistan has faced repeated sectarian and militant attacks targeting religious gatherings, especially affecting minority communities and places of worship in recent years.
Authorities say investigations continue and further arrests are expected as Pakistan vows tougher action to prevent future attacks and improve protection for religious sites nationwide.
