ISIS Claims Deadly Mosque Bombing in Pakistan’s Islamabad
ISIS claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing at a mosque in Islamabad as Kabul rejected Pakistan’s claims linking Afghanistan to attack.
The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing at a Shia mosque in Islamabad that killed at least 31 people and injured 169 others during Friday prayers, according to the IS statement on Saturday.
Pakistani officials said the attacker detonated explosives at the mosque gate after being confronted by security volunteers, causing heavy casualties among worshippers gathered for prayers.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif vowed to bring those responsible to justice as security forces increased patrols and investigations continued into the attack.
Earlier, Pakistan’s defense minister Khawaja Asif claimed the attacker had links to Afghanistan, but Kabul rejected the allegation, calling accusations against Afghanistan baseless.
Taliban’s Defense Ministry said Pakistan often blames Afghanistan after attacks without presenting evidence and urged Islamabad to address its internal security challenges instead.
Pakistan has faced a surge in militant violence in recent months, with religious gatherings and civilian areas increasingly targeted across different provinces.
Security tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have also risen, with both sides accusing each other of failing to control militant groups operating along the shared border.
Analysts warn continued attacks threaten regional stability, stressing that improved intelligence cooperation and political dialogue are needed to prevent further violence.
