Carrick effect sparks 'new long-term contract' talks for undroppable Man Utd star
Manchester United have taken a decisive step as they begin planning for a crucial summer transfer window.
According to the Manchester Evening News, United are set to open contract talks with Kobbie Mainoo and are hopeful of agreeing a deal with the academy graduate before the end of the season.
Negotiations between the two parties took place last year but ultimately broke down without an agreement.
The Red Devils now want to resume talks over a “new long-term contract” with Mainoo, in the hope that terms can be reached relatively smoothly.
Mainoo last signed a contract as a 17-year-old in February 2023 and he is one of the lowest-paid players in the United squad.
The Stockport-born midfielder still has a year left on that contract, with the club having an option to extend his deal by 12 months.
After failing to start even a single Premier League game under former manager Ruben Amorim, Mainoo has been ever-present under caretaker manager Michael Carrick.
United have been particularly impressed with how Mainoo has fared in the first three games of Carrick’s reign.
The United academy graduate even submitted a loan request last summer but the club swiftly rejected it.
Mainoo is a generational talent. He has brought calmness and control to midfield and has played himself into a position where he feels virtually undroppable.
The Red Devils must now reward that impact with a bumper new deal, reflecting both his importance and his enormous potential.
Mainoo’s love for the club is there for all to see, and United know that players with a deep emotional connection to Old Trafford are priceless in any rebuild.
