Louisiana AG Will Sue Gavin Newsom and Kathy Hochul for Allow Illegal Mail-Order Abortions

Louisiana Attorney General announced today that she plans to sue New York Governor Kathy Hochul and California Governor Gavin Newsom for their refusal to honor Louisiana’s extradition requests for doctors in their states who have committed felonies in Louisiana by sending abortion pills into the state.

Benjamin Clapper, Executive Director of Louisiana Right to Life has issued the following response:

“Louisiana Right to Life wholeheartedly supports AG Murrill’s consistent effort to protect Louisiana women and their unborn babies. AG Murrill has never backed down from a challenge when it comes to enforcing Louisiana’s pro-life laws, and we stand behind her in this next phase of that effort. We have been sounding the alarm for years on the dangers of abortion pills and the ways they harm women, destroy families, and take innocent lives. Our state has made its policy to protect women and unborn babies clear. States like California and New York should not be able to force their desire to protect abortion on every other state.”

Erica Inzina, J.D., Policy Director for Louisiana Right to Life adds,

“California and New York doctors have been hiding for too long behind so-called shield laws to save them from accountability for their criminal activity. Frankly, the very existence of ‘shield’ laws shows that they know what they are doing is both illegal and medical malpractice. Otherwise, these sham laws would not be necessary. Regardless of one’s views on elective abortion, as consumers we should all be very skeptical of such sweeping efforts to shield wrongdoers from accountability at the expense of those harmed.

Louisiana lawmakers and law enforcement have worked very hard to protect women and their unborn babies from the harm of  abortion pills, as is their right and duty. Shield laws allow doctors to profit off of harming women and babies in Louisiana with impunity. It is illegal. It is immoral. And it is time for these shield laws to come down. If out-of-state doctors aren’t committing crimes, they do not need shield laws to protect them. Stop being cowards, and show up to defend your actions.”

States like New York and California argue that their laws are valid because doctors are allowed to prescribe abortion pills in their states. Governors like Kathy Hochul and Gavin Newsom maintain they will uphold their states’ decision to protect abortion access within their state. However, this controversy between the states has less to do with their states’ decisions to protect abortion access and more to do with their desire to impose elective abortion on other states.

Inzina continues,

“Nobody is arguing that they can’t allow abortion in their own states. The problem is that they are forcing their devotion to abortion on other states and impeding states like Louisiana from upholding their own laws that protect women and their unborn babies. If doctors like Remy Coeytaux and Margaret Carpenter want to provide abortions in their own states, then sure – Louisiana can’t stop them. But Louisiana also has the right to prohibit abortion and abortion pills for the protection of its citizens. Our leaders have made it abundantly clear that they intend to do just that, and we support Attorney General Murrill’s commitment to enforcing our laws.”
