‘Highly respected MAGA warrior’: Trump announces his pick to replace Marjorie Taylor Greene

President Donald Trump endorsed Republican candidate Clay Fuller on Wednesday evening to succeed former Republican Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene in Congress.

Fuller, an Air National Guard officer and Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit district attorney, is one of 21 candidates vying to fill Greene’s deep-red northwestern Georgia House seat. He placed fourth in the 2020 Republican primary during which Greene was first elected to the House of Representatives amid another crowded field of candidates.

“He is strongly supported by the most Highly Respected MAGA Warriors in Georgia, and many Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives,” Trump wrote on Truth Social announcing the endorsement. “Clay Fuller has my Complete and Total Endorsement to be the next Representative from Georgia’s 14th Congressional District – HE WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN!”

Fuller immediately thanked the president, whose public support can often sway the result of contested GOP primaries.

“This is the honor of a lifetime. I will not let you or Georgia’s 14th District down,” Fuller wrote on X. “Our work to put America first is just getting started!”

Voters in Georgia’s 14th congressional district will elect Greene’s successor in a special election scheduled for March 10. The contest could head to an April 7 run-off election during which the top two vote-getters would compete if no candidate wins more than 50% of the vote. There is no primary election to winnow the sizable number of candidates.

Trump’s endorsement comes as some Republicans have grown concerned that a Democratic candidate could advance to the run-off election given the fractured GOP field. Democratic candidate Shawn Harris, who lost to Greene by roughly 30 points in 2024, is running for the open seat.

The winner of the special election contest could also have immediate consequences for Republicans’ efforts to retain House control amid a slimming majority. House Speaker Mike Johnson currently has a two-vote margin, meaning he can only lose one Republican in a party-line vote.

Greene resigned from the House in January following a public falling out with Trump after spending the past several years as one of his most vocal supporters. The recently retired lawmaker has not backed a candidate in the race.

Georgia State Senator Colton Moore, former Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) official Star Black and 14th congressional district GOP chairman Jim Tully are among other GOP candidates also vying for the open seat.
