Arizona Journalist Receives Alleged Ransom Email Linked to Nancy Guthrie Kidnapping
A second journalist has reported receiving a ransom note tied to the kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie, according to a new report from CNN.
On Tuesday, reporters at TMZ revealed they had received a ransom note said to be from the mother-of-three's abductors, demanding millions of dollars worth of bitcoin — although the exact amount was not disclosed by the publication. The tabloid also claimed there was a vague threat of "or else" in the note, and their findings in tracing the bitcoin address concluded the address was a legitimate site. They also stated that they had passed on the note to the authorities in Guthrie's home state of Arizona.
Nancy Guthrie, daughter of NBC anchor Savannah Guthrie, was last seen at 9:45 pm on Saturday evening, when she was taken home by her son-in-law, Tomasso Cioni. Nancy had attended dinner that evening with Cioni and her daughter, Annie. Despite speculation online, Cioni is not a suspect in Nancy's disappearance.
Nancy was reported missing by her family after a friend reported to them that she failed to turn up for her usual Sunday church service. Police reports detailed apparent blood stains and a ripped-out Ring camera at her Tucson home.
On Wednesday, Tucson journalist and broadcaster Mary Colemanappeared on CNN's Erin Burnett Outfront and shared information about the alleged ransom note that was sent to the KOLD news station via email.
Coleman, like the CNN reporters, did not disclose much information to the public about what the note detailed. "There are a few things that we can share as far as what the contents were," Coleman told CNN.
"A lot of it is information that only someone who is holding her for ransom would know — some very sensitive information and things that people who were there when she was taken captive would know."
However, the journalist disclosed that there was "a dollar amount" in the ransom note, as well as a "deadline" for their demands to be met. Additionally, there were also allegedly "other specifics that only Guthrie's abductor might know, so that definitely raised some red flags." Coleman also added that KOLD sent the note to the Sheriff's department, and the detective is looking into tracking the IP address.
In an emotional Instagram video shared last night, Savannah Guthrie appeared alongside brother Camron and sister Annie in a message to their mother and her kidnappers.
In the video, Savannah and her siblings shared what they love about their mother, and their promise to bring her home to safety, while also acknowledging the 84-year-old urgently needs her prescribed medication. In the video, they expressed a willingness to negotiate with her captors in exchange for he release. "We, too, have heard the reports about a ransom letter in the media," Savannah said in the video. "As a family, we are doing everything that we can. We are ready to talk."
