Injury blow: £42.9m Man United star unlikely to return before March - opinion
Manchester United are riding a wave of momentum after securing three consecutive victories under caretaker head coach Michael Carrick.
Despite a difficult start to the 2025–26 campaign, the Red Devils now find themselves firmly in the race for a top-four finish and a return to the UEFA Champions League next season.
The Red Devils will next face Tottenham Hotspur in the English top flight, with Carrick having put his squad through their paces in training yesterday.
It was revealed that Mason Mount and Matthijs de Ligt were absent from training, opening the door for a few academy starlets.
While Mount missed the previous match due to a knock, De Ligt has not featured since November 30.
The Dutch defender is currently battling a back injury, with the club offering little clarity on when he could be available again.
We believe that De Ligt may not be able to return to action before March at the earliest.
Back injuries can be notoriously difficult to manage, often requiring extended rest and careful rehabilitation.
The 26-year-old is also expected to be part of the Netherlands squad for the upcoming World Cup.
The centre-back is unlikely to rush back and risk aggravating the issue with a hurried return.
Even if the £42.9 million signing is able to resume training by mid-February, he would still need at least a couple of weeks to regain full match sharpness.
In the meantime, Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez are set to continue leading United’s defence.
The pair have already developed a strong understanding, covering for each other’s weaknesses while maximising their individual strengths.
Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro also provide reliable depth from the bench, giving Carrick additional options if required.
United will be hoping De Ligt can make a timely return to strengthen their push for a strong finish to the campaign.
