Bill Simmons Blasts Tom Brady’s Tone-Deaf Super Bowl Comments
Tom Brady is taking a lot of heat for his seemingly harmless Super Bowl comments earlier this week.
On Monday’s episode of his “Let’s Go” podcast, Brady said he “doesn’t have a dog in the fight” for this week’s Super Bowl between the Seattle Seahawks and his old team, the New England Patriots.
That’s not what Patriots fans, including Bill Simmons, wanted to hear. New Englanders supported him for two decades while he was there and even after he left, and he can’t even throw them a bone?
“I tried not to take it personally when Tom Brady said he didn’t have a dog in this race for the Super Bowl between the Patriots and the Seahawks, even though he played for the Patriots for 20 years, won six Super Bowls for the Patriots,” Simmons said in an Instagram video on Wednesday. “There’s a statue of Tom Brady outside the stadium where the Patriots play. Seems relevant…guess he doesn’t remember that.”
Simmons noted how New England fans faithfully defended Brady at every turn, from early Peyton Manning comparisons to his infamous “Deflategate” scandal. They’ve always taken his side, stood up for him and supported him, even when he abandoned them to go win another championship with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Patriots fans have literally worshiped Brady, naming their children and pets after him. And yet, he can’t be bothered to show them even a hint of support in their biggest game of the season?
“It’s like he’s gone out of his way to make it seem like he just passed through (New England) for two decades,” Simmons continued. “And the danger of this, is that for Patriots fans…he’s at risk of that getting a little frosty.”
Simmons says Brady should come out and declare his appreciation for the team, the fans and the Krafts — anything to show the fanbase he still cares about them and knows how much another title would mean to them.
Will Brady follow his advice? Probably not, but he should at least consider it.
