Harrison Ford Just Dropped a Major Hint About His Retirement Plans
At 83 years old, Harrison Ford's Hollywood career stands amongst the greatest of all time. The actor has portrayed iconic characters like Han Solo, Indiana Jones, and Jack Ryan, becoming one of most marketable stars of his generation. His recent foray into television has brought him even more work, with Ford taking leading roles in multiple recent series. And while he's not done yet, he is starting to think about retirement. But only because he's feeling creatively fulfilled.
The veteran star currently appears in the Apple TV+ series Shrinking, where he plays Dr. Paul Rhoades, a senior therapist with Parkinson's Disease. The series follows Jason Segel's Jimmy Laird, a therapist who, while grieving the death of his wife, decides to breach ethical barriers and start to tell patients what he really thinks about them. Shrinking was just renewed for a fourth season ahead of its third season premiere, and it sounds like the role has Harrison eyeing the exit.
During a recent panel at an Apple TV press event in LA reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Ford said he would be content if this were his final role.
“Where do you go from here? The kind of work that we’re able to do is remarkable given the tools we have to work with, and the notion that lies behind this series. And if it was all over here, that would be sufficient,” he said.
“This has been a different kind of job for me, and I’ve been doing this for a long time,” Ford further explained. “This is very special and it really nurtures me and makes me feel like what we’re doing has value and importance. I look for that in my life and I’m happy to have found it here.”
Ford Has Pushed Back Against Retirement Before
Last year, Ford shut down the idea of retirement, saying he would keep going as long as he remained in demand. “When you forget my name," he told Entertainment Tonight about the prospect of him stepping back from the entertainment industry. In addition to Shrinking, Harrison Ford has recently appeared on Taylor Sheridan's Paramount+ series 1923, a prequel to his massively popular Yellowstone. The second and final season of that show aired last February.
At the time, Ford also joked that he was "stupid" to have entered such a busy work period so late in his life.
“Good writing," he said about what keeps him excited and active. "I just stumbled into a kind of vein of it, and that’s why I’m so ubiquitous right now."
Back in 2015, he told Rolling Stonethat he thinks of retirement as an ongoing process.
"I retire every time I'm done with a movie. Then I go back. You know, I enjoy sleep. But I love to work; it's fun for me," he said. "As long as it continues to be fun, and I'm tolerated by the people around me, I will do it."
