Why Cristian Romero is spot on about the Tottenham hierarchy after another transfer window failure - Opinion

Cristian Romero has once again voiced his concerns about the Tottenham Hotspur board, and it is hard to disagree with him based on the lack of transfer activity in the past month.

Disappointment surrounds the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as the transfer window slams shut. Injuries have seen the Tottenham first-team squad brought to their knees, yet there are only two new arrivals.

Spurs are languishing in 14th in the Premier League table and the club’s supporters now fear the worst for what remains of the season.

But guess what, this is a description of the situation Tottenham found themselves in after the mid-season transfer window last year. Shockingly, the circumstances at this present moment are not just similar, they are literally identical.

Tottenham have only signed two players in January

Despite Thomas Frank desperately needing players, Spurs have only made two signings, and neither were the kind of big name the fans were hoping for.

Conor Gallagher played well during the 2-2 draw against Manchester City, but he is not the box-to-box midfielder the club still need. Ultimately, he is likely a direct replacement for Rodrigo Bentancur who will miss much of what is left of the campaign due to a hamstring injury.

Then there is Souza, who is the equivalent of when Tottenham signed Mathys Tel last season. Only the Brazilian left-back is even less likely to start than Tel was and this could continue to be the case next season.

With Brennan Johnson gone and more injuries plaguing the squad, Spurs are actually worse off now than they were at the beginning of January.

Spurs went into the January window needing a deep-lying playmaker, a new left-winger, some cover on the left side of defence, and more creativity/spark up front. They ended the window with an injury crisis, Conor Gallagher, and a teen left-back from Brazil, while also selling their top scorer from last season without signing a replacement.

Take a look at Man City. They came into the window knowing they needed a top-class centre-back to plug a severe injury gap, so they signed Marc Guehi. They also knew they needed more firepower up front to compete with Arsenal in the title race, so they signed the brightest winger in the Premier League – Antoine Semenyo. Time and time again, City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Man United show that kind of proactive investment and ambition, leaving Tottenham in their dust.

Cristian Romero has called out the Spurs hierarchy

Following another unacceptable transfer window, Cristian Romero has taken aim at the Tottenham board, describing the lack of available players in the team as ‘disgraceful’.

The captain is absolutely right to hold those in charge to account, because he and everyone familiar with Spurs knows exactly how this will all end.

Tottenham will continue struggling to compete in the Premier League, only this time there is no chance of a trophy. The waka waka chant has already been updated to ‘17th you know the rest, we’re going to Budapest’ – but realistically this simply will not happen.

Eventually, Frank will take the fall and be sacked, offering renewed vain hope in a future project which will fix the team. However, this story has been told already and it usually ends the same way. So long as ENIC are still here, nothing is going to truly change.
