Winter Storm Warning Map Shows States Bracing for Up to 7 Inches of New Snow
On Tuesday, Feb. 4, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a new round of winter storm warnings expected to bring up to seven inches of snow to a handful of states.
On top of the snow, areas of the U.S. are bracing for another round of arctic cold, taking temperatures to subzero levels for millions of Americans.
"A significant arctic outbreak will bring bitterly cold temperatures and dangerous wind chills to the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic this weekend," the NWS's Weather Prediction Center announced on Monday, Feb. 2. "Much below-normal temperatures are forecast, with record-breaking cold possible in some areas. Gusty winds will exacerbate conditions, producing widespread subzero wind chills. Brief periods of intense snowfall, including snow squalls, are possible with the arrival of the cold air."
National Weather Service Map Shows Areas of Concern
This week, the NWS shared a map on their official X page showing the areas of the country with the most extreme cold weather returning. "Extreme cold returns to the East this weekend," they warned in the post. "A significant arctic outbreak will bring bitter temperatures, dangerous subzero wind chills, and the potential for brief snow squalls across the Northeast and northern Mid-Atlantic."
Even outside of these areas, other areas of the country are bracing for cold weather. One of those states is Florida, an area not used to extreme cold. According to the NWS, Inland Broward, inland Palm Beach, the Glades, Hendry and Inland Collier counties have been issued freeze warnings.

Expected Snow Amounts
So, where is the snow going, and how much will be falling? According to the experts from AccuWeather, several states will be expecting up to several inches of snow.
"A widespread coating of snow is forecast from southern Illinois eastward through Virginia, Maryland and Delaware," AccuWeather said in a statement provided to Men's Journal. "Several inches of snow are possible in the Ohio Valley and central Appalachians, while cities such as Washington, D.C., and Baltimore could have up to an inch late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, with a stripe possibly reaching Maryland's Eastern Shore."
AccuWeather adds that by Wednesday, Feb. 4, and Wednesday night, "snow will focus across southern Virginia and northern North Carolina. Farther south, there can be a mix of rain, snow sleet and evening freezing rain across North Carolina Wednesday night, which could lead to icy spots for the Thursday morning commute."
"A storm moving into the cold air in western Tennessee on Tuesday is expected to move east towards the Virginia coast into Wednesday, bringing a quick-hitting bout of snow," AccuWeather senior meteorologist Tyler Roys said in a Tuesday, Feb. 3, feature. "Unlike the last few storms that passed through the region, this one is not forecast to strengthen rapidly, which will generally keep snowfall totals on the lower end than recent ones," AccuWeather added in the piece.
For those who aren't used to shoveling snow, the NWS says to avoid it. "Shoveling snow can be a strenuous activity, particularly because cold weather can be taxing on the body," they state. "There is a potential for exhaustion, dehydration, back injuries or heart attacks."
