Planned Parenthood is Fully Defunded After Dropping Lawsuit

Planned Parenthood has voluntarily dismissed its lawsuit challenging a defunding provision in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, marking a major victory for pro-life advocates who have long sought to end taxpayer support for the nation’s largest abortion company.

The abortion giant dropped its legal challenge Friday to the law that redirects Medicaid funding away from abortion businesses for one year.

The move follows a U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit ruling in September that lifted a preliminary injunction in a related case, allowing the Trump administration to continue withholding reimbursements from nearly 600 Planned Parenthood clinics across 48 states.

“The American people do not want their tax dollars propping up the abortion industry,” said Erik Baptist, senior counsel at Alliance Defending Freedom, which filed a friend-of-the-court brief in support of the defunding. “This legal action should never have happened in the first place, and now we are assured that Planned Parenthood will not bypass the people’s choice to protect taxpayer funding.”

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed into law by President Donald Trump on July 4, passed narrowly in Congress amid strong advocacy from pro-life lawmakers. It halts the use of taxpayer dollars to fund the abortion industry, building on the First Circuit decision that sided with the Trump administration in a suit filed by more than 20 Democrat-led states and the District of Columbia.

Planned Parenthood, in a statement, acknowledged the shift: “The goal of this lawsuit has always been to help Planned Parenthood patients get the care they deserve from their trusted provider. Based on the 1st Circuit’s decision, it is clear that this lawsuit is no longer the best way to accomplish that goal.”

The U.S. Supreme Court had previously affirmed in a related case last year that states have the right to exclude organizations like Planned Parenthood from Medicaid funding, a decision Baptist highlighted in praising the outcome.

“The U.S. Supreme Court affirmed last year that states have the right to fund real care and exclude organizations like Planned Parenthood that profit off abortion, and we are glad to see the federal government following suit,” he said. “Alliance Defending Freedom will continue to stand against any attempts by the abortion giant to force Americans to fund dangerous procedures.”

Meanwhile, Troy Newman, President of Operation Rescue also celebrated the victory:

“We love seeing Planned Parenthood throw in the towel, though it comes as no surprise. Operation Rescue has been documenting the steady implosion of Planned Parenthood for more than a year. Its affiliates are rife with internal turmoil, employees have come forward to blow the whistle on abuse and mismanagement of funds, and it’s losing more than Medicaid funding. Thanks to Trump’s recent defunding of research involving aborted fetal tissue, Planned Parenthood’s steady flow of profit from the illegal sale of aborted baby body parts is also about to dry up – something Operation Rescue has been calling for since 2015, when we helped co-found the Center for Medical Progress and expose Planned Parenthood’s criminal revenue streams from aborted babies.

“Planned Parenthood, like the rest of the abortion industry, has always survived on political prowess gained through fraud and deception. Americans are starting to see the face behind the mask, and we are tired of our taxpayer money funding it. To Planned Parenthood and their slimy attorneys I’d say, don’t let the courthouse doors hit you on the way out.”

With the lawsuit dropped, the provision takes full effect, redirecting resources toward genuine health care options for low-income patients. Planned Parenthood reported that roughly 50 of its abortion selling locations have been forced to close since the Medicaid restriction took effect last summer.
