£46.6m Man Utd star poised to surpass David Beckham's 26-year club record
Manchester United secured a third-straight Premier League win after a 3-2 victory over Fulham at Old Trafford last weekend.
Bruno Fernandes was once again exceptional in the final third. He delivered a fine cross for Casemiro to open the scoring.
The Portuguese also turned provider for Benjamin Sesko, who scored a dramatic 94th-minute winner for the Mancunian giants.
With his two goal contributions, Fernandes has registered 12 assists in the league season, five ahead of Manchester City’s Rayan Cherki.
The midfielder, who was signed for £46.6 million in 2020, is just three assists shy of David Beckham’s club record of 15 Premier League assists, set in 1999/2000.
With another 14 matches left in the top flight campaign, Fernandes looks poised to eclipse the feat and could break the competition record as well.
Thierry Henry (Arsenal) and Kevin De Bruyne (Man City) have the most clean sheets in a Premier League season with 20 (2002/03 and 2019/20).
Fernandes has registered 12 assists from just 21 league games this term. At the current pace, he could end up with 22 assists and a new PL record.
The 31-year-old is not someone who focuses on individual achievements, but his contributions will be key to United’s Champions League (UCL) pursuit.
They find themselves in a strong position at the moment, having jumped to fourth in the table, one point ahead of Chelsea and two in front of Liverpool.
Fifth place could also be enough to qualify for the elite competition next term, given the excellent performances of the English clubs in Europe.
Hence, United have some leeway but must continue their winning streak to increase the points gap so that an odd defeat does not hamper their UCL prospects.
United host Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League in Saturday’s early kick-off. Spurs have been a bogey club for them, with three draws and five losses in the last eight meetings.
The Red Devils must end the dreadful streak and avenge last season’s Europa League final defeat. Fernandes has six goal involvements against Spurs and could play a big role again.
