Sports briefs: Cal Poly-bound Chamberlin helps Archie Williams to victory
Sean Chamberlin found the back of the net a day after announcing his commitment to play for Cal Poly to help lead the Archie Williams High boys soccer team to a 3-0 win against Terra Linda on Monday.
Devin Singh and Leo Grandmaison also scored for the Peregrine Falcons (10-4-3, 4-1-2), who moved into a third-place tie with Terra Linda (7-4-4, 4-1-2) in the standings but hold the head-to-head tiebreaker. Henry Miller and Grandmaison had assists for Archie Williams while goalie Aidan Dunn secured a clean sheet.
Archie Williams, the 2025 regular-season champions, could still finish in first this year but need to beat first-place Tam and have second-place San Rafael lose to San Marin on Wednesday
- Niccolo Machotka-Farley posted a clean sheet in goal as Branson (6-4-3, 3-3-1) held Tam to a 0-0 score line on Monday. The result saw the Red-tailed Hawks (11-3-4, 5-0-2) remain in first place but their lead over San Rafael dwindled to a single point heading into the final day of the season on Wednesday.
- Seven different players scored as San Rafael rolled to a 7-0 victory against Novato (0-8-1, 0-6-0) on Monday. Rayley Cauich, Bradley Puac, William Lopez Reyes, JJ Higgins Jones, James Ward, Matt Bender, and Fausto Herrera did the scoring for the Bulldogs (10-4-6, 5-1-1). Osbaldo Vasquez paced the team with two assists. Lopez Reyes, Logan Dean, Herrera, and Higgins Jones also set up goals. Goalie Max Gatewood registered his fifth shutout in MCAL play.
- Redwood (6-4-4, 4-3-1) secured the fifth spot in next week’s MCAL playoffs following a 3-0 victory against Marin Catholic (4-8-2, 0-6-1) on Monday.
Prep football
Former Drake High standout Darius Bell was named the head coach for Sacred Heart Cathedral on Monday. Bell played quarterback for the then-Pirates as a sophomore in 2005 before transferring to Archbishop Riordan for his junior season in 2006.
Bell went on to star at City College of San Francisco before playing spending three years at UCLA, seeing action in 10 games as a redshirt senior in 2012.
Bell moves to Sacred Heart after serving as the offensive coordinator for the football team at Junipero Serra in San Mateo since July 2018. Bell is the younger brother of former Marin Catholic running back Kahlil Bell, who went to to star at UCLA and played five seasons in the NFL, primarily with the Chicago Bears.
College baseball
Patrick Kozielec hit a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to lift College of Marin to its first victory of the season, 6-4 against Lassen on Sunday.
Andrew Gamble led off the ninth with a single then Kozielec homered to lift COM (1-3) to victory. Gilbert Roth (Archie Williams) and Will McLemore (Tam) also drove in runs for the Mariners.
Starting pitcher Micah Marquez allowed one hit and struck out five over five innings of work.
College softball
Kate Tobola and Annabelle Burke both went 3 for 4 at the plate to lift Dominican University to a 10-4 win against Nebraska Kearney in Irvine on Sunday.
Tobola hit her first homer run of the season, a three-run blast in the seventh inning. The Penguins (3-2) stretched their lead from 5-4 to 10-4 during the five-run inning.
Hannah Escalante pitched 5.1 innings of relief, allowing two hits and three walks to earn her first victory of the season.
