Ex-superintendent of Evanston/Skokie School District 65 arrested in Georgia on assault charge
A former superintendent of Evanston/Skokie School District 65 was arrested on assault charges in Georgia, records show.
Devon Horton, who was at the center of a federal indictment alleging a kickback scheme last year, was charged with a felony count of aggravated assault, strangulation and a misdemeanor count of cruelty to children in the third degree, court records from DeKalb County, Georgia, show.
In January, Horton was arrested after police responded to a domestic call at his home in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Police said an argument between Horton and his wife turned physical, leading to the assault charge.
Horton's bond was set at more than $27,000 and was posted, according to court records.
Horton's attorney didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.
Horton was the superintendent of the DeKalb County School District in Georgia but was placed on administrative leave after being slammed with federal corruption charges alleging he misused district money in October. The indictment alleged Horton steered contracts toward companies owned by friends of his that were founded with the goal of signing contracts from the school district. The companies allegedly put money into a sibling’s bank account, which was then funneled to Horton.
He allegedly collected tens of thousands of dollars in kickbacks from his friend's companies, the indictment states.
