Skyrocketing Super Ad Rates Hit $10 Million for 30 Seconds
Super Bowl ads get as much attention as the big game itself, and it’s costing advertisers a pretty penny.
Viewers can expect clever ads from pharmaceutical companies, soda brands, and tech companies paired with famous celebrities hawking their wares.
“While I would love to say it’s brilliant strategy and execution, part of it is just the marketplace demand,” Mark Marshall, chairman, global advertising and partnerships, NBCUniversal told ADWEEK. “We did start earlier this year than in years past. There was so much interest in the Super Bowl and the Olympics, so we went to the marketplace earlier with packages that would include both of them.”
Prepping for Super Bowl 60
Marshall started talking to advertisers about Super Bowl 60 last year. He didn’t add more ad slots and is keeping the total of ad spots to around 80. NBC asked for around $7 million for a 30-second spot, but the price quickly rose to $8 million for other sporting events.
Following the Super Bowl, Marshall will fly to Milan for the Olympics, which is also a major money maker for ad space.
Look for Ben Stiller and Benson Boone in an upcoming Instacart commercial. Emma Stone and Filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos will be featured in a Squarespace commercial highlighting the all-in-one website builder. William Shatner will be in a Kellogg’s commercial. Pepsi’s teaser features a polar bear doing a blind taste test.
Come for the big game, stay for the commercials, and Bad Bunny in the halftime show.
