It’s a mom-only dance party at The Roxy this weekend
Who likes to party? Your mom does.
No, seriously. Because mothers do so much, there’s an event just for moms making its Los Angeles debut, and it’s meant to be a high-vibe celebration of motherhood, joy and self expression, all for the encouragement of mental health — and for a good time, of course.
The Mom Dance Party comes to The Roxy on Saturday, Feb. 7 when moms will be dancing the night away to music by well-known Los Angeles DJ Lindsay Luv.
“It’s a way for moms to take a much needed break from the caregiving role and have an evening that prioritizes just their own fun and joy in the community of other moms,” said Elizabeth Wellington, co-founder of the Denver-based Moms Feelin’ Themselves, which organizes the mom’s dance parties nationally.
“Our purpose is to create spaces for mothers to reconnect with community and themselves and find healthy releases for the pressures of motherhood in a supportive environment,” said Wellington, a mother of two who works as a perinatal therapist focusing on mothers when she’s not dancing the night away.
Wellington and co-founder Sarah Battani Sams started the event in 2022.
“We conceptualized it really out of my own experience transitioning into motherhood when I was postpartum with my first son and I was astounded by the level of the intensity of that transition and the lack of preparation I experienced even as a mental health practitioner. So we came up with the mom dance party as a way to meet our own needs during that period of time and to provide what we think is a really critical gap in support and care for mothers,” she said.
So what can moms expect?
Throwback music from the 1990s, so polish up those sweet dance moves, some singalongs, and maybe even a new sense of the need for moms to focus on themselves, Wellington said.
“Imagine you enter this really fun place and you’re immediately greeted by a warm loving team of mom greeters who make you feel immediately welcomed and special. And you walk in, unlike a typical concert or dance event, you just see other moms. It is a space where we are all friends,” Wellington said. “They leave with this very visceral feeling of ‘oh, now I know I really need to take care of myself more because this feeling felt so good,’” she added.
And yes, moms can also bring their own moms for a multigenerational dance party.
“I think this resonates with moms of all ages,” Wellington said.
