Iran’s Foreign Minister Says Regional Countries Working to Restart Nuclear Talks with US
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated Sunday that regional countries are working to facilitate renewed nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States through diplomatic channels.
Araghchi told CNN that several countries are currently transmitting messages and attempting to prepare the groundwork for genuine and meaningful negotiations between the adversaries.
The Iranian foreign minister referenced President Trump’s comments, saying “a fair and just deal that ensures Iran will not have nuclear weapons” is achievable and attainable even in the short term.
The 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action collapsed after Trump’s 2018 withdrawal and reimposition of sanctions, leading Iran to gradually breach uranium enrichment limits while maintaining its program is peaceful. International inspectors report Iran has accumulated significant highly enriched uranium stockpiles, bringing it closer to weapons-grade material despite denying any intention to build nuclear weapons, creating ongoing Western concerns about breakout capability.
Regional mediation efforts reflect Middle Eastern countries’ anxiety about potential US-Iran military confrontation that could devastate the area’s security and economy. Gulf Arab states including Oman, Qatar, and UAE have served as intermediaries in past US-Iran communications, though they have also declared they will not allow their territory or airspace to be used for military strikes, highlighting regional desire for diplomatic solutions over armed conflict.
Araghchi emphasized Iran’s nuclear program is peaceful and the country is ready to negotiate confidence-building measures in exchange for sanctions relief from Washington.
The foreign minister warned that if negotiations fail, Iran is prepared for war and “even more ready” based on lessons from recent conflicts, stating any US-Iran war would engulf the region due to widespread American military bases.
Tensions have escalated dramatically following Iran’s violent crackdown on protests, with Trump demanding Iran return to negotiations or face severe consequences as the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier group deploys to the Middle East.
