Drivers warned of treacherous icy roads and thick fog in wake of Storm Chandra

The Met Office has issued a weather warning as the temperature will drop this week (Picture: Getty Images)

Ice is set to blanket roads in parts of the UK as temperatures will plummet this week after the chaos of Storm Chandra.

A yellow warning for ice has been put in place covering south-west England, parts of Hampshire, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Yellow Met Office warnings mean there is likely to be low level disruption to people’s lives, including travel disruption.

According to the Met Office, the warning will be active from 10pm on Sunday until 9am on Monday, with the potential for fog also highlighted.

A Met Office spokesman said: ‘With wet surfaces following recent rain and temperatures falling close to or below freezing, icy patches will be possible on untreated surfaces for a time on Sunday night into Monday morning.

‘The extent of cloud cover across parts of Wales and central southern England is more uncertain, which will influence whether temperatures fall sufficiently low enough to allow ice to form.

‘A few fog patches may pose an additional hazard.’

Kitesurfers took to floodwater after Somerset Levels found itself submerged when more than 50mm of rain fell on Thursday (Picture: Alex Rosevear / SWNS)

This latest alert follows a dreary month of persistent heavy rain, snowfall and stormy weather.

Earlier this week regions of the UK were hit with major flooding and high-speed winds brought on by Storm Chandra.

A major incident was declared in Somerset due to a high risk of flooding in the levels and moors.

On the Somerset Levels, ultra high-volume pumps are still operating to clear floodwater, and the major incident status remains unchanged.

Somerset Council has cautioned that more rainfall could lead to further properties being flooded in the Moorland, Saltmoor and Currymoor areas.

The Environment Agency reported that water levels in the River Tone, Somerset, have stabilised, and that the Parrett flood relief channel has been opened to allow excess water to drain.

Additional contingency pumps have also been installed at Aller Drove and Westonzoyland.

Elsewhere in the country, a man in his 60s died this week after his lorry drove into the River Avon near the New Forest, Hampshire.

Across England, 58 flood warnings are still active, most of them affecting Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire.

118 flood alerts remain in place nationwide.

Wales has two flood alerts in effect, one covering Pembrokeshire and another in Powys, while Scotland currently has three flood warnings issued for Tayside and Orkney.
