Hibs 0 Rangers 0

Hibernian aimed to recover strongly from last weekend's defeat, as they welcomed Danny Rohl’s Rangers side to Easter Road in an important William Hill Premiership match.

Hibs performed well throughout the 90 minutes, creating multiple chances towards the Rangers goal, but could not get that elusive goal. Mikey Moore thought he put Rangers ahead in the 76th minute with a low finish into the bottom corner, but his effort was disallowed for offside.

David Gray made two changes from his side that took on Falkirk last Saturday, as Club Captain Joe Newell and forward Elie Youan came into the starting XI. New signings Owen Elding, Kai Andrews and Dane Scarlett were named amongst the substitutes.

The first chance of the game came the visitors' way as an attempt from the edge of the box from Thelo Aasgaard was deflected over the bar and out for a corner. The resulting set-piece was delivered by the Norwegian midfielder to the near post and met the head of Nicolas Raskin, who nodded the ball on, and John Souttar aimed to deliver it homewards, but this proved no trouble for Raphael Sallinger as it went over the bar.

New signing Andrews made his debut for the Hibees earlier than expected, as Miguel Chaiwa was forced off with injury and replaced by the Welsh international after just 10 minutes.

Hibs had their first look at goal just moments later, as a long throw by Jack Iredale was delivered to the centre of the box and was not dealt well with by the Rangers defence, and fell to Newell, whose shot was blocked by the Rangers defence. This attempt fell back to Newell, who had another opportunity towards goal, but his shot was dealt with easily by Jack Butland.

Newell then had another opportunity for Hibs in the 23rd minute, as Youan delivered a fantastic cross from the left side of the box, which landed on the head of the Hibs skipper, but he could not direct the ball towards goal, and the game stayed level.

Youan then had a chance of his own three minutes later, as he won the ball from John Souttar and countered forward for Hibs. He then created space for a shot on the left-hand side of the box, but his left-footed effort was saved low by Butland.

The French forward then continued to be a threat towards the Rangers' backline, as he saw a curling effort from the edge of the box saved brilliantly by Butland after great midfield play from substitute Andrews on 27 minutes.

Rangers then threatened 10 minutes later with their first chance since the early stages of the match, as a dangerous ball from the left-hand side from Djedi Gassama found Andreas Skov Olsen at the back post, who attempted to volley home on the stretch but this was cleared away by Iredale near the goalline.

After 39 minutes, Hibs went close again as a dangerous free-kick from the left-hand side won by Jordan Obita after a cynical foul from Dujon Sterling was powerfully delivered into the centre of the box by Dan Barlaser. This delivery whizzed past the post as Rangers struggled to deal with the danger.

Hibs then went close again as Martin Boyle was sent through on goal by an excellent pass from Newell, but Butland came off his line quickly and made himself big to close down Boyle and save the Australian international’s eventual shot after 42 minutes.

The chances just kept coming for Hibs as a minute later Obita delivered a brilliant cross from the left-hand side, which found Elie Youan, but he could only head it wide as Hibs continued to threaten the Rangers goal.

After a quiet opening to the second 45, Hibs countered a Rangers attack well as Boyle broke away and played a through ball to Youan; with the latter still having a lot to do, he found himself inside the box and cut onto his right foot to create space for a shot, but he saw this blocked by the Rangers defence.

The visitors had their first chance of the second half after 64 minutes, as Emmanuel Fernandez aimed to find the back of the net from the edge of the box; however, he saw his shot deflected, and Sallinger parried it out for safety.

David Gray looked to his bench for a second time after 65 minutes as Rudi Molotnikov and new signing Elding came onto the pitch, with the latter coming on for his Hibs debut, replacing Newell and Boyle, respectively.

Gray then made his final changes five minutes later. After an impactful performance from Youan, he made way, being replaced by Hibs debutant Scarlett. Grant Hanley also came off after being forced off with injury, and he was replaced by Nicky Cadden, with Obita filling in at centre-back to allow Cadden to play his natural left side.

Rangers thought they opened the scoring on 76 minutes, as a direct ball from the Rangers defence found substitute Moore, who then went on to finish well past Sallinger into the bottom left corner; however, the linesman decided the Englishman was in an offside position, which was then confirmed by VAR.

Hibs then went on to have a couple of half-chances for themselves, as both Kanayo Megwa and Elding had chances blocked by the Rangers defence within a minute of each other as the match approached the final stages.

The Hibees continued to ramp up pressure on the Glasgow side, as Scarlett drove through the Rangers half, eventually being tackled by Souttar, which then led to the ball landing to the feet of Elding, who had room for a first-time shot but this rolled into the hands of Butland.

Hibs kept on pressurising the Rangers goal, as Molotnikov had a half-chance in the 95th minute after a dangerous counter-attack from the Hibees, but this was turned behind by the Rangers defence.
