This Major Retailer Is Expanding Its Same-Day Delivery to 17,000 Locations

​Dollar General has become the main retail option for hundreds of small towns across the country, and the neighborhood retailer is now bringing a new service to rural areas where even giant chains Target and Walmart can’t compete — same-day delivery.

​The delivery service began in 75 locations in 2024, and it was seemingly a success. Today, the delivery service is available at more than 17,000 locations.

​“With approximately 75 percent of the U.S. population living within five miles of a DG store, the company is uniquely positioned to bring same-day delivery to communities that have long been underserved,” a DG statement says.

​The service, used through the myDG Delivery app, has a special promotion through February 28, where customers can get free delivery on one myDG Delivery order using their myDG account. The chain also offers one-hour delivery if you choose to pay the $1 ASAP fee. Coupon savers can also use the app to clip digital coupons and gain cashback for qualified purchases.

​“myDG Delivery is helping bridge the digital gap by extending same-day delivery to rural communities nationwide,” states Lydia Thatcher, vice president of digital commerce. “We are proud to offer a service that not only brings convenience to our existing customers but also introduces new customers to the Dollar General brand through a frictionless digital experience.”

​The delivery service, which partners with DoorDash and UberEats to meet demand, began in late 2024 as a pilot program in 75 stores.

​The delivery service coincides with plans to open another 450 U.S. stores and 10 in Mexico throughout the year, along with remodeling 4,250 locations. The service will also bring more customers — and new advertisers — to the general store’s app and in-house DG Media Network, according to CEO Todd Vasos on a quarterly analyst call.

​“We own rural America out there across the United States,” Vasos said. “And today, even in the second inning that we’re in, over 70 percent of our orders that are done are delivered to an individual’s front door in an hour or less, even in rural America. And that is a strong proposition that no one’s been able to touch.”

​In recent years, Dollar General has been making waves in the retail space by focusing on often-ignored rural markets. This choice has allowed the retail giant to rapidly grow their number of stores in a way that other stores can’t replicate. For example, in just the states of Texas, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania, DG has more than 5,800 stores. This is more stores than Walmart has across the entire United States.

​While Dollar General was once a dark horse in the retail race, no one is ignoring them now — especially when same-day delivery is on the table.
