Lockdown lifted for Cree Nation in Quebec after fatal shootings
The Cree Nation of Mistissini in Quebec is no longer on lockdown on Thursday after a “serious shooting incident that has resulted in multiple fatalities,” according to its chief.
In a post on Facebook , Chief Michael Petawabano confirmed that provincial police, Sûreté du Québec, and local police, the Eeyou Eenou Police Force, said it was “safe for community members to resume normal activities.”
The lockdown was put in place after two people were killed on Wednesday evening, Sgt. Hugues Beaulieu said, the Canadian Press reported. The victims were men in their 30s.
The double murder may be related to organized crime, he said. There is no longer an active shooting in the area.
“While the investigation remains ongoing, law enforcement has determined that there is no continued threat to public safety,” the post said. “Our hearts remain with the families, and we continue to stand together as a community in support of those affected by this tragedy.”
Crisis support services are available for anyone who “needs assistance during this time of healing.”
During the lockdown, all community buildings, including schools and offices, were temporarily closed, Petawabano said in a Facebook post. Travel in and out of the community was restricted at the time and residents were urged to remain in their homes.
Late Wednesday, an emergency notice was posted on Facebook, saying there was “an active shooter who remains at large.” The Council of the Cree Nation of Mistissini then authorized the community-wide lockdown. Just after midnight, another post said there was “ongoing police intervention” within the community.
The total registered population of the Cree Nation of Mistissini, as of December 2025, is 4,257, according to the federal government.
