'Marty Supreme' Star Drops Out of Controversial A24 Project
Marty Supreme star Odessa A'Zion has announced that she will no longer star in Sean Durkin's upcoming A24 movie Deep Cuts after learning about her character's heritage.
The actress was supposed to be playing Zoe in Durkin's upcoming adaptation of Holly Brickley's novel, a character who is written as Mexican and Jewish. A'Zion's background is a mixture of Ashkenazi Jewish and German. She took to Instagram on Wednesday to confirm her departure from the project, stating: "I hadn't read the book."
Odessa A'Zion Apologised For The Miscasting
"I am with all of you and I am not doing this movie," A'Zion confirmed after fans voiced their concern about the actress playing a character outside of her own ethnicity. "I'm so sorry that this happened."
A'Zion continued by explaining that she auditioned for the main character of Percy, who will be played by Cailee Spaeny in the film adaptation. Instead, she was offered the role of Zoe and "instantly said yes," unaware of the character's background.
"I'd never take a role from someone else that's meant to do it," A'zion expressed. "There are a plentitude of people more than capable of playing this role and I am not one of them. I can't wait to see who it ends up being."
'Deep Cuts' Will Go Ahead Without A'Zion
While the role of Zoe will obviously need to be recast, the remainder of Deep Cuts' cast will reportedly stay the same. Cailee Spaeny will play the lead role of Percy, a music critic who sparks a complicated relationship with a local artist named Joe. Drew Starkey has been cast in the role.
Austin Butler and Saoirse Ronan were originally attached to the project, but they were both forced to drop out over scheduling issues last year. The film is directed by The Iron Claw's Sean Durkin, with Marty Supreme's Eli Bush, Ronald Bronstein and Josh Safdie acting as producers.
