Car Ramming Attack on NYC Synagogue Being Investigated as a Hate Crime (Video)

A man was arrested after repeatedly ramming the doors of the Chabad Lubavitch World Headquarters in Brooklyn, New York, as thousands of people gathered in prayer during a holy celebration on Wednesday evening.

Authorities say the suspect is a 36-year-old man from Carteret, New Jersey, who is currently being treated as an emotionally disturbed person.

Officers were already patrolling the area and watched as the driver struck the building multiple times. After exiting the vehicle, the driver was quickly detained by police.

ABC7 in New York reported, “He’s yelling at the boys to move out of the way as they were standing in the driveway, and then he pulled his car in,” said Avrohom Pink, a witness.

“And the he starts ramming the building. Driving in, reversing, driving in, reversing, just driving in and out, must have done it like five times. Straight away the boys ran over to the police unit parked outside the main entrance of the building and ran, the police came, and pulled him out of the car and arrested him. He’s about 6 foot, long hair, he was just in his, he was wearing a shirt, but just underwear.”

Now, the incident is being investigated as a Hate Crime by the Department of Justice.

Although the man claimed to police on the scene that his car was having “mechanical issues,” Fox News reports multiple witnesses saw the man lurking outside before the incident, and they believe he is the same person seen at other locations in New Jersey.

Yaacov Behrman, the Chabad’s spokesperson, spoke with The New York Post.

Behrman said he believes the crash was “intentional” with “biased motivation.”

“This is a very serious incident — it’s very frightening. We know how dangerous it is to be Jewish today worldwide. We’re concerned about what this person intended to do, and we’re waiting for assurances from the police department that the area is safe,” said Behrman.

Police maintain a strong presence outside the synagogue on Thursday morning.
