When Tottenham will learn next Champions League opponents in knockout phase draw
Tottenham have the luxury of sitting tight and waiting for the Champions League draw for the knockout phase, but when does it take place?
Spurs went into the final gameweek of the league phase knowing that their fate was in their own hands. A win against Frankfurt would have been enough to see them through, and Thomas Frank’s men delivered just that.
Another three points, another goal for Dominic Solanke, and another clean sheet; all things to celebrate, and hopefully more to come as the Lilywhites look forward to the round of 16 now.
We learned a lot from that Tottenham win vs Frankfurt, but we still don’t know who will await in the next round. But, here’s when all will be revealed.
Tottenham will be waiting for Champions League draw
While the 16 teams finishing 9th to 24th in the league phase must now fight it out for the other eight spots in the round of 16, Spurs can sit back and watch it all unfold.
Once those games, which take place on 17/18 February and 24/25 February, are played and decided, the draw for the next rounds will occur on 27 February.
That draw will decide everything, from the round of 16 fixtures, and even how the quarter-finals and semi-finals will be determined. There will be different sides of the draw and each team’s path will be laid out before them.
Champions League last 16 games will take place on 10/11 March and 17/18 March. Quarter-finals are on 7/8 April and 14/15 April. The semi-finals will be played on 28/29 April and 5/6 May. The final is on 30 May.
Some huge teams are heading for Champions League play-offs
It’s obviously great news that Spurs are through to the next round without any need for a play-off. We also know Tottenham will get a favourable draw for the round of 16 and the quarter-finals.
However, we should be a little bit worried about the calibre of teams that are in the play-offs. Quite literally, some of the very best teams in the world could be heading Tottenham’s way in the next two rounds.
The likes of Real Madrid, Inter Milan, PSG, Juventus and Atletico Madrid are all huge sides that would strike fear into anyone. Meanwhile, we know how difficult Newcastle are to beat, while the likes of Atalanta, Bayer Leverkusen, Galatasaray, Benfica, and Bodo/Glimt are no pushovers.
Still, if you want to do well in this competition you’re going to have to play and beat the best teams. Let’s just hope that’s not necessary for Spurs just yet.
