EU and Vietnam Upgrade Ties to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership
The European Union and Vietnam have agreed to elevate their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership, the highest level of diplomatic cooperation.
The European Union and Vietnam announced that they have upgraded their relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership, marking the highest diplomatic status between the two sides.
The Associated Press reported on Thursday that both parties are seeking to recalibrate trade ties amid disruptions caused by US tariff pressure on the global financial system.
European Council President Antonio Costa said the upgrade places Vietnam on the same diplomatic level for the EU as the United States, China and Russia.
Costa said that at a time when the rules-based international order is under threat from multiple directions, reliable and predictable partnerships are increasingly essential.
Vietnamese President Luong Cuong described the move as a “historic milestone” in relations between Hanoi and Brussels.
The EU and Vietnam have steadily expanded political and economic cooperation over the past decade, with trade and supply chains becoming central pillars of the relationship.
In 2020, the two sides signed a free trade agreement that significantly boosted bilateral trade and investment flows.
Officials said the partnership upgrade is expected to deepen cooperation on trade, security and global governance, as both sides navigate growing geopolitical and economic uncertainty.
