Sports Briefs: San Marin claims mat title
San Marin beat Terra Linda, then Tam in Wednesday’s tri-meet to clinch the MCAL title. The Mustangs rolled to a 65-9 victory over the Trojans in the first match of the regular-season finale. Orion Smith (108), Dom Greco (115), Luke Miller (140), Quinn Peterson (159), Landon Pearce (177), AJ Conkey (192) and Miro Salvado (217) all had pinfall wins for the Mustangs. Tristen Manisone (128) had the Trojans’ only win with a pin.
The Mustangs (6-0) beat Tam High, 54-25, in the final match of the day to clinch an undefeated season. San Marin’s David Coronado pinned Tam’s Dylan G. Hayes in a heavyweight showdown.
The North Coast Section team tournament is slated for Saturday, while the MCAL boys and girls championship meet is scheduled for Feb. 7.
- Tam High beat Terra Linda, 51-27, powered by pinfall wins from Sienna Horger (115), Owen Shore (146), Dylan Van Doren (152), Damian Puente (192) and Hayes (217). The Red-tailed Hawks’ Tyrell Smith (140) outdueled Kaden Pace in a 10-8 decision. Manisone, Ari Stein (134), Aiden Koerner (159) and Xavier Ganguly (177) had pinfall wins for the Trojans, who also got a 13-11 victory from Charlotte McKay (108).
- Redwood High’s Dylan Morton continued his hot streak with a hard-fought win as the Giants beat Novato, 41-23, in Wednesday’s MCAL wrestling regular-season finale. Morton, who placed third at the Puma Classic over the weekend, pinned the Hornets’ Ryan Costa at 140 pounds on Wednesday. The Giants’ Charlie Seraphine (152), Hayden Schepps (167) and Ayaan Naseer (122) also had pinfall wins. Rex Kohner (115) also won for Redwood. Kaden Wagner-Fuller (192) and Jiriah Vannasy (128) won for Novato.
- San Rafael High’s Mariana Barrios (140) and Nikolai Bruce (167) both scored pinfall wins as the Bulldogs (1-5) edged Archie Williams High, 36-27, in Wednesday’s regular-season finale. The Peregrine Falcons (0-6) got mat wins from Asaac Kiptum (146) and Jay Pikkerainen-Klein (134), who outscored the Bulldogs’ Edinson Diaz, 17-12.
Boys basketball
San Rafael (13-10, 2-3) avenged an earlier loss in Mill Valley with Tuesday’s 73-55 victory over Tam High. The Bulldogs’ Thomas Hellyer scored 13 points, including 8 in the first half, and Paxton Ishikawa tallied 8 points and 9 rebounds. San Rafael senior Luke Shapiro came on strong in the second half to finish with 27 points, while junior Jax Aguillon added 14 points. Wyatt Tornello and Will Healy combined for 23 rebounds for San Rafael.
- Porthos Oliveira led the Red-tailed Hawks with 15 points, while Henry Bennett and Elliott Kruger scored 11 points each for Tam (12-11, 3-3).
- Archie Williams High (15-6, 4-1) beat Novato, 87-42, on Tuesday. Chris Toussaint put up 27 points for the Hornets(0-22, 0-5), who got seven points from Gabe Rimbaud. The Peregrine Falcons face Redwood on Friday in a key matchup for the race for the top seed in the MCAL playoffs.
- Leo Centeno scored a game-high 20 points as Redwood High (9-11, 5-1) survived a late scare for a 54-36 victory over a shorthanded San Marin squad in Larkspur in Tuesday. Charlie Poser added nine points for the Giants. The Mustangs, who were playing without Grant Means, cut the gap to four points in the fourth quarter.
- St. Vincent earned a 67-40 victory over Healdsburg on Tuesday as the Mustangs were led by Novato residents Jack Ellis (17 points), Dylan Chelew (16 points) and George Chaput (12 points).
- After a close loss in their first meeting, Marin Academy came out on top with Tuesday’s 62-55 victory over San Domenico. The Panthers (15-7, 3-3 BCL) are set to play Urban on Thursday, while the Wildcats (14-8, 1-5) will play Stuart Hall.
