What’s on this weekend

Get ready for a weekend packed with events for all ages and tastes. The events calendar is filling up as spring draws closer, bringing exhibitions, chocolate workshops, village festivals, markets and remarkable performances

Friday

Every good weekend begins on Friday, and the last day of this week marks the beginning of several exciting events. First up is a photography exhibition by Anna-Maria Weinhold at Prozak exploring the impact of emotionally abusive, unhealthy and toxic relationships.

Titled Home is not a Place. It is a Feeling will be more than just a showcase, though, as the creator aims to raise awareness around this topic and open up the space for the public to learn more, gain insights and share experiences.

At the opening evening at Common Room, Prozak special guests will share insights while conversation cards and more information about unhealthy, toxic and emotionally abusive relationships will be at hand. When the exhibition concludes its Nicosia duration it will travel to Morfi Gallery in Limassol in February and Palia Ilektriki in Paphos in March.

Also opening on Friday night in Nicosia is the Agropoetics: Soils/Bodies exhibition. Curated by Dr Elena Parpa, the exhibition at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (ex-SPEL) brings together over 50 historical and contemporary artists and their creative approaches to ‘landscape’. A showcase of great significance for Cyprus’ art scene, it will remain on display until June 30, with several parallel events taking place.

In Aradippou, Kafenion Ermis is putting on a live music night this Friday, inviting the Anaren Bourekk band for rembetiko and folk songs while the coffee shop serves bites, cold beers, zivania and more.

For three whole days, children and adults in Nicosia can indulge in a candy wonderland as Sweetopia Chocolate & Candy Fun takes place. From Friday to Sunday, the Melina Mercouri Cultural Centre will be filled with chocolate flavours, masterclasses for old and young, candy installations and many more. Organised by Inspired Family Fun, the three-day event will offer moments of discovery and sweet delight, exciting all senses.

Also happening at the end of the week is the Cyprus debut of the world-renowned Gabriadze Theatre from Tbilisi, Georgia, with the production Alfred and Violetta. The handcrafted puppet theatre is an acclaimed show worldwide, one that has been described as “a Georgian national treasure” and as “puppetry at its highest level.”

Marionettes crafted by the hands of the brilliant artist Rezo Gabriadze will come to life on the Rialto Theatre stage on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, presenting a timeless love story inspired by La Dame aux Camélias and Verdi’s La Traviata.

Saturday

The weekend will begin with a pop-up market. At the CopsCats Centre in Pyla, a Charity Winter Bazaar will take place with market stalls selling carefully selected items. The cat rescue venue organises the event to help local artists and its animals. Apart from art browsing, there will also be grilled bratwurst sausages and vegan options.

In Paphos, Third Space Art Centre is hosting a Laughter Yoga Workshop led by Antigoni Louca. Combining intentional laughter and yogic breathing, the practice aims at boosting mood, reducing stress and energising the body. A special workshop will take place on Saturday at 11am, welcoming novice yogis.

On the music front, the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra will present two concerts by the CySO Piano Quartet. Concertmaster Wolfgang Schroeder, principal cellist Jakub Otčenašék and principal viola Kumiko Okutomi of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, alongside the distinguished pianist Gergana Georgieva will join forces to present two landmarks of the Romantic chamber repertoire.

First, they perform in front of Nicosia audiences on Saturday at Pallas Theatre, before heading to Larnaca’s Municipal Theatre G Lycourgos on Sunday evening.

Sunday

Sunday begins with the Pano Akourdaleia Artisan Market. This monthly market is back with more vendors selling handcrafted and locally-grown items, from food and art to coffee, tea and local products. From 10am to 2pm, the village’s old school ground will fill with artisans and visitors out on the perfect Sunday morning stroll.

In Arakapas, the 3rd Mandarin Festival is on from 11am to 7pm with live entertainment, workshops, market stalls and of course, plenty of opportunities to enjoy the citrus fruit in diverse recipes and forms.

Inviting families on an outdoor adventure, BirdLife Cyprus celebrates World Wetlands Day with an event in Paralimni. Meeting at Paralimni Lake, visitors will partake in birdwatching, spotting flamingos, mallards, shelducks and other waterbirds.

To end the week with high spirits in Nicosia, Sarah’s Jazz Club is welcoming comedians and comedy lovers for a night of laughs. Peter, Anthony, Ersin and Aleen will take the stage to offer their fast-paced stand-up comedy, punchy one-liners and comic moments.
