Henry Cavill Reveals 2 New 'Highlander' Photos — And He Looks Perfect
Who says there can only be one? Henry Cavill posted first-look photographs of himself playing Connor MacLeod, the immortal protagonist of the upcoming Highlander remake. And, as Cavill looked good wearing Superman's cape and Geralt of Rivia's armor, he looks great in this latest iconic genre role.
"Happy First Look for Highlander!" Cavill posted to Instagram on Wednesday. "This has been quite the journey for me, which I'll tell you all about when the time is right, but it's a special moment to be able to share this. I hope you enjoy."
The first image shows Cavill wearing a heavy coat as he walks underneath red lanterns surrounded by lit candles. The second has him standing in a sunbeam inside of what looks to be a cathedral, his sheathed sword by his side.
Reboot Plot Shrouded in Mystery
Few details about the plot of the upcoming reboot, which is being helmed by John Wick director Chad Stahelski, have been made public, though the settings of the two first-look images suggest it could be a globetrotting adventure.
The original 1986 Highlander movie is an '80s action classic. Christopher Lambert starred as a the immortal warrior who was born in the 16th century and must do battle with The Kurgan, a villain played by Clancy Brown who hunts him down in then-present day New York City. Sean Connery played Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, MacLeod's mentor and fellow immortal. Lambert and Connery returned for the 1991 sequel, Highlander II: The Quickening. There were other, lesser films and TV series that followed, but the upcoming remake is the highest-profile revival of the franchise in recent memories.
Russell Crowe, Dave Bautista, Marisa Abela, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Jeremy Irons, Max Zhang, and Drew McIntyre co-star in the remake, with Crowe playing Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez and Bautista playing The Kurgan.
Highlander is the latest in a series of big genre roles for Cavill, who previously played Superman in the DCEU and the protagonist of Netflix's The Witcher for three seasons. (He was also in 2015's The Man from U.N.C.L.E., which isn't really on the same level as any of these other titles but is a really fun little spy flick.) Principal photography for Highlander began earlier this January, having been delayed after Cavill was injured during rehearsals.
