Giannis Antetokounmpo Has Reportedly Decided on His Future With the Bucks
Giannis Antetokounmpo is officially ready to move on from the Milwaukee Bucks, and the franchise is willing to let him go, according to a new report from ESPN's Shams Charania.
Antetokounmpo's future was a major topic of conversation before this season, and the "will he stay or will he go?" storyline has continued over the last three months.
Now, ahead of next week's NBA trade deadline, both the Bucks and Antetokounmpo are ready for a fresh start.
Giannis 'ready for a new home'
Charania reported that the two-time NBA MVP is "ready" to move on, with "several teams" making "aggressive" offers to the Bucks before next Thursday's deadline.
Milwaukee is beginning to listen, with some teams believing the Bucks "are more open than ever to Antetokounmpo offers between now and the deadline," league sources told Charania.
"However, Milwaukee has indicated to interested teams that the organization is not in a rush to complete a move and is willing to navigate Antetokounmpo's future in the offseason if its believed price point of a blue-chip young talent and/or a surplus of draft picks isn't met," Charania wrote. "By waiting until the summer, the Bucks could also see which teams are able to offer more appealing draft picks in June."
Antetokounmpo, who is likely to miss the next few weeks with a calf strain suffered last Friday, becomes eligible to sign a four-year, $275 million supermax extension on Oct. 1, 2026.
Should he decline an extension, the 31-year-old superstar could become an unrestricted free agent in the 2027 offseason by declining his $62.8 million player option that summer.
Which teams may make a run at Giannis?
The other 29 NBA franchises would all love to have the "Greek Freak" on their roster, but only a few can realistically set their sights on him.
The New York Knicks and Miami Heat have long been rumored as potential Giannis destinations, and SNY's Ian Begley reported Wednesday that both are expected to pursue the 10-time All-Star.
However, while the Knicks and Heat would obviously love to land Giannis before the Feb. 5 deadline, Milwaukee may be better off waiting until the offseason, says NBA salary cap analyst Yossi Gozlan.
"The Knicks and Heat seem like the natural frontrunners for Giannis Antetokounmpo," Gozlan said. "The Bucks can extract more from these teams in the offseason. The Heat can trade two first-round picks now and four in the offseason. The Knicks can trade zero now but up to two in the offseason."
Other teams that could look to get involved, per insider speculation, include the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder. The Houston Rockets won't pursue Giannis, according to ESPN's Tim McMahon.
In 30 games this season, Giannis is averaging 28.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 5.6 assists while shooting 64.5% from the field.
