Sports Briefs: San Domenico girls outlast rival Marin Academy
San Domenico earned a split of the regular season girls basketball series with rival Marin Academy as the Panthers held on Tuesday evening for a 34-32 victory.
The Wildcats’ Navah Bailey, who scored a team-high 12 points, finished a layup to cut the gap to just two points with 5 seconds to play, but Marin Academy (13-8, 2-4 BCL) could not complete the comeback after trailing the entire second half.
Asia Melodynsky and Sanne Kostecki led the Panthers with 10 points each, while Amara Bailey had 11 rebounds. and four points.
San Domenico (8-10, 3-3) moves into a third-place tie with Urban heading into Thursday’s showdown.
- Brooke Denler led theGiants with 15 points as Redwood High rallied to edge San Marin, 50-48, in Tuesday’s battle of unbeatens to take sole possession of first place in the MCAL. The Giants (16-5, 6-0 MCAL) are scheduled to take on Archie Williams on Friday, while San Marin (14-8, 4-1) plays rival Novato. - A strong second half pushed Archie Williams High to its third consecutive win, a 43-27 victory over Novato on Tuesday. The Peregrine Falcons (12-8, 3-2 MCAL) outscored the Hornets, 27-16 after the break. The loss snaps a three-game streak by the Hornets (8-13, 3-2). Delphina Dong led a balanced Falcons attack with 11 points, knocking down two 3-pointers. Lila Peterson and Reese Patton scored eight points each, also with two 3-pointers, for the Falcons and Parker Conrad scored seven points. Archie Williams is scheduled to take on Redwood in Larkspur on Friday.
Boys basketball
Archie Williams High (15-6, 4-1) beat Novato, 87-42, on Tuesday. Chris Toussaint put up 27 points for the Hornets(0-22, 0-5), who got seven points from Gabe Rimbaud. The Peregrine Falcons face Redwood on Friday in a key matchup for the race for the top seed in the MCAL playoffs.
- Leo Centeno scored a game-high 20 points as Redwood High (9-11, 5-1) survived a late scare for a 54-36 victory over a shorthanded San Marin squad in Larkspur in Tuesday. Charlie Poser added nine points for the Giants. The Mustangs, who were playing without Grant Means, cut the gap to four points in the fourth quarter.
- San Rafael (13-10, 2-3) avenged an earlier loss in Mill Valley with Tuesday’s 73-55 victory over Tam High. Porthos Oliveira led the Red-tailed Hawks with 15 points, while Henry Bennett and Elliott Kruger scored 11 points each for Tam (12-11, 3-3).
- St. Vincent earned a 67-40 victory over Healdsburg on Tuesday as the Mustangs were led by Novato residents Jack Ellis (17 points), Dylan Chelew (16 points) and George Chaput (12 points).
- After a close loss in their first meeting, Marin Academy came out on top with Tuesday’s 62-55 victory over San Domenico. The Panthers (15-7, 3-3 BCL) are set to play Urban on Thursday, while the Wildcats (14-8, 1-5) will play Stuart Hall.
College baseball
An error to lead off the top of the ninth inning led to the decisive run as College of Marin fell 2-1 to San Mateo in Tuesday’s baseball season debut at Kentfield.
Tam High grad Will McLemore scored on a double by Archie Williams High grad Gilbert Roth as the Mariners took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. San Mateo tied the game on an unearned run in the fifth.
Mariners starter Chaz Veley struck out three batters and walked two, while allowing one hit in 4 1/3 innings. Reliever David Skaggs took the loss as he registered two strikeouts and gave up two hits across 1 2/3 innings of work. Four Marin pitchers held San Mateo to four hits. Marin is scheduled to host Santa Rosa on Friday.
Girls soccer
Reese Goodenough scored twice in the first half and Tatum Colpitts added an insurance goal as Marin Academy surged past University, 3-1, on Tuesday. Alegra Huck had a strong game in net for the Wildcats.
Women’s basketball
Jaidyn Brown scored 17 points and ripped down seven rebounds to lead College of Marin to a 83-53 victory over Los Medanos on Monday night in Kentfield. Erica Foster and Jamaia Harrison came off the bench to score 10 points each for the Mariners (12-9, 4-3 BVC), who travel to Napa Valley on Wednesday.
- Dominican University battled back after a rough first half for a 58-53 home win over Menlo on Monday night. Mahliya Wilson led all players with 23 points to go with six rebounds and three steals for the Penguins (15-3, 9-3 PacWest). Isobel Crosswhite added 12 points and Aryn Bright finished with 10 points both off the bench.
Men’s basketball
Darius Best scored 22 points to help power Dominican University to a 83-76 victory over Menlo on Monday night. Nick Medeiros, Sargent Jeffery and Jorge Ochoa scored 11 points each for the Penguins (11-7, 6-6), who are scheduled to play Vanguard University in Costa Mesa on Thursday.
