Formula 1 Driver Announces Engagement to Professional Golfer
Another WAG with a ring has officially joined the pit! (In case you didn’t know, the term WAG refers to wives and girlfriends of professional athletes.)
Williams driver Alex Albon announced his engagement to long-time girlfriend Lily Muni He, a professional golfer.
Albon posted a Polaroid of the beaming couple on his Instagram grid, captioning the photo, “I guess we’re stuck with each other now ❤️????.” He is pictured showing off a heart-shaped engagement ring.
How Did Alex and Lily Meet?
The two met in 2019 over social media.
In an interview with Golfweek, He shared the details of how they met. “Back in 2019, I was in a slump. I was in a really bad place mentally. It was my rookie year and I wasn’t playing well at all,” she said.
Her friends encouraged her to watch Drive to Survive, the Netflix series following the drivers, managers, and the high-pressure demands of the Formula 1 circuit. She, too, at the time, was facing similar stressors as a competitive athlete.
“I know as bizarre as this might sound, it got me really motivated in golf instantly,” she said.
She followed Alex on Instagram, who coincidentally was just getting into her sport. “I guess that’s how we technically met,” she explained.
As two rookies in their respective fields at the time, the two connected. They kept in touch, talking on the phone, which eventually led to meeting in person in Los Angeles.
In separate interview with Golfweek, Albon said, "We played some golf together and that’s how it all got started."
On What Makes their Relationship Work
Speaking about their strengths as a couple, Albon said, "We’re both athletes. It’s a pretty cool place because also, on top of everything, we understand and we get each other. We started our sports as rookies, and we‘ve gone through tough times together."
He continued, "The highs and lows of being an athlete, I think you can resonate that with any athlete. But it also comes with the space that you need. You need a lot of time to work on yourself, and I think golf is really like that, too."
Since getting together, the couple supported each other around the globe popping up at their respective sporting events.
He played collegiate golf at University of Southern California before joining the LPGA tour in 2019. According to LPGA, she has nine top-25 finishes on her LGA Tour resume and is an Epson Tour winner.
